Quick rant ...

Attention recruitment agencies! Wakey wakey!

You do not need 60+WPM typing to do audio/dicta typing, especially in a medical practice!

It is not copy typing, where the copy just sits there and looks back at you, it is audio typing, where you've got a set of headphones on and you're listening to the doctor speaking.

Do you have any idea how quick your typing speed vanishes when you're constantly stopping to replay that last phrase because he/she has mumbled, burped, slurred, played x-rays like a wobble-board or blurred the tape?

No, people. You don't need a high speed. What you need is a competent typing speed of around 40+, a good ear, a good command of the English language (or whatever language you happen to be working in) and you need to KNOW your STUFF. You need to be able to either figure out what the doctor's saying on that tape, and/or figure out what he/she means and get it down on that screen. 60+WPM don't mean shit if there's huge gaping lines of ?????? where you didn't understand what he said! All that means is the letter goes through you again once it's corrected, and yeah, that's a big point for expediency, isn't it?

Gah. But still these stupid agencies insist on advertising for 60+WPM, and testing your speed on copy typing.
