AmeriCorps is a national service program that started in 1994. There are many, many programs all over the country that are supported by AmeriCorps -- KEYS Service Corps, my program, is a local program that concentrates on education, but other programs focus on adult literacy, health, and disaster response, to name just a few things. The idea is that you serve as an AmeriCorps member for a set number of hours and you earn an educational award that you can use to pay off qualified student loans or pay for school up front. While you're serving, if you already have federally backed student loans, you can put them in deferrment through AmeriCorps and all of your interest will be paid (or half of it if you're working part time, etc).

My program provides me with a living allowance and free health care in addition to the ed award. I'm also getting lots of training in various skills and hands-on experience working in a school, which I think will be very helpful in deciding what I want to do with my future.

I hope that's an adequate explanation. Let me know if you have any more questions. =)

As far as Phoenix Wright, I highly suggest borrowing the games. I'm playing through Jim's copy of PW:AA now and having a blast. Keep in mind that you need to play the games in order for the story to make sense.
