Blood Blonde Curls

10.20.05 --- 4:40 pm.

I had to hold a girl's head together.

I was driving from First Street to Fouth. I bought some groceries from Wal-Mart and I was listening to The Offspring -- The Kids Aren't Alright. There was a teal car that was going to make a left hand turn.

She hit the girl who was crossing the street. Her blonde curly hair few into the air. I thought to myself, "She's going to die."

I was the first girl to her side. Two people were onlooking. I gave my cell phone to one of them and said, "Dial 911." I took off my hooded jacket and wrapped it around the girl's shoulders. She was kneeling but she looked awkward. Her leg looked longer than the other. It was probably broken.

I realized that she held the back of her head and swayed foward and backward. I asked her, "Hon, what is your name?" She said, "Jennifer."

"Please don't let me die."

I looked at the back of her head. Her blonde curls were streaked with bright red blood. I could see her skull. I took my hoodie that was over her shoulders and held it onto her head. She asked everyone around her to find her glasses and her phone. She was bleeding out of her right ear.

"I can't see without my glasses, Megan. I can't see."
The onlookers found her phone..it was in 3 pieces. We could only find one lens from the glasses.

"I don't want to die."

The 911 operator told us to keep talking to her. I asked, "Would you want to call your mom or dad, friend or roomate?" She called her mother but she got her answering machine. I kept pressure on her skull. I told her, "The worst part is over. You're going to be okay."

The paramedics came 10 minutes after it happened. When they were putting the girl on the stretcher, her mother called. I answered the phone. I had to tell her mother that her little girl was hit by a car. She started crying. I told her that she was conscious and she was going to be fine. I yelled at the EMT's to let her mother talk to Jennifer. They let me give her the phone. When she finished talking to her, she handed me back my phone.

It was red with blood.

The paramedics cleaned my hands off and thanked me for staying with Jennifer. They told me, "You did a great job, Megan. She lost less blood because of you."

I started to cry.

I can't get what happened out of my head. I know that she'll be okay...but it was so traumatic.

I had to hold a girl's head together.
