Originally I was going to make a simple dress ( http://www.koshka-the-cat.com/striped18c.html ) then I decided I really wanted it to lace in front. I was about to cut out the skirt when I realized I hadn't really thought about how the new style effected the waist seam. I got a little overwhelmed by thinking of new options! Glad to hear a second on the shorter length. It all makes much more sense to me now that I have slept on it.
I do like the first option best of your sketches. Caracos are adorable. Is the petticoat the same color as the gown? And is there enough to make a gown and a caraco.... If not, I like the look of a contrast caraco myself. But in the same material they can be gorgeous too.
It wasn't very helpful, since I flip flopped! I would say to cut according to the cloth, so you use the most of it. If a caraco would leave enough for another project then cut shorter.
Yes the petticoat is the same fabric: http://www.denverfabrics.com/catalog_itemdetail.aspx?ItmID=XX897 Looking at my fabric again I remember that the stripes are railroaded...so I may not be able to get a full length skirt with the en fourreau back anyway...Ha! Guess that answers that.
