"I don't know why you do this to yourself," Cas grumbles as he stitches up a gash in Dean's arm. Someone got a little too close the night before, Dean would have to talk to Gabriel about designing him a new suit, something to withstand unexpected knife attacks.
"You know why I have to, Cas," he says, scrolling through the news feed on his phone. "Someone has to rid the world of demons."
"Why does that responsibility fall to you?" The concern in Cas's voice makes Dean look up.
"It just does."
With a sigh, Cas goes back to work, not saying another word. Dean watches him, noticing how steady Cas's hands are as they stitch him up.
"What would I do without you, Cas?" he says, tone light and cheeky, though they both know he means it.
"Bleed to death, probably," Cas deadpans. Dean cracks up and Cas just gives him a little smirk. "Maybe you need a sidekick."
"Like who? You wanna suit up, Cas?"
"Not me. I was thinking of your brother."
Dean goes still and looks away. "Haven't heard from him in a year, Cas. He's in the middle of nowhere, or he's dead for all we know."
Cas looks up with a small smile. "He contacted me this morning."
Dean's face is stunned for a few moments before it breaks into a grin. "Let's go bring him home, then."

I THINK I READ AN AU LIKE THAT ONCE. I'll never be able to find it now, but it DOES exist.
Sam is so much more hardcore than Dean, lol.
