SPN: Jigsaw Puzzles Without the Box, Sam and Castiel

Castiel's not really Castiel anymore, in any of his incarnations (apparently when you try to usurp the Big Guy he doesn't just smite, he smites hard). He's just a man named Castiel, in a skin once borrowed then bought by an angel named Castiel.

Sam knows this, understands this, and still every time he looks at this new Cas all he sees is flames and the world is gone.

Sam sees the way it hurts Dean, caring for a broken friend and a broken brother, sees the pain it causes Dean when the sight of Castiel's fingertips turns Sam's skin to ice.

So Sam works up his strength, over weeks, and one night he goes to Castiel, watches the man framed by the open window and the midnight air, and Sam fights back the flames for all he's worth.

The fight doesn't last long, but it gives Sam time enough to say his piece.

I know it's not your fault, Sam tells the man by the window. I'm going to fix this, Sam promises. I'm going to get over this.

Then the flames erupt again, and the burn erases Sam's rationality and Sam's promise.

For now.
