She spent a summer in Italy once, wasted it sunbathing on the beach and eating too much gelato---it wasn't a waste; the house isn't her prison anymore and she dreams of all the places she could go---New York City, Dublin, Fiji---she could go, in theory, could form an image in her head and be standing on foreign soil by the time she opened her eyes, but she would be alone, properly alone, so she stays with George, even after, she stays and tells herself, no regrets.

He knows it's useless but Aidan can't help trying, and when his hand passes through hers like smoke Sally holds in her tears--Aidan knows what it's like, being nothing, feeling nothing, no matter how much he lies to himself; she's not really there, and neither is he.
