Dawn's waiting in line when she gets the text message from her sister: "stuck at work! cappuccino disaster! SOMUCHFOAM!!! >:-["

She rolls her eyes, sighs, and contemplates ditching the crowd, but she's been dying to see Between Two Worlds and A Brand New Life for weeks now (Buffy had laughed at the titles -- "don't you think that's a little... on the nose?" -- before agreeing to go with her).

Way she sees it, Dawn has two options: fly solo and potentially have a creepy guy hit on her in the middle of a crowded theater, or go home and think of ways to torture her sister for no doubt breaking the stupid cappuccino machine on purpose just so she wouldn't bruise her teeny tiny brain from reading subtitles for a few hours.

She's settling on her totally mature torture my sister plan when she hears a guy calling, "Anybody have an extra ticket? Anybody? I'm good for it, promise!"

She bites her lip, then thinks why not? and waves her tickets in the air. "I've got one."

He's by her side in one smooth move, a grin creasing his cheeks. "You're a life saver -- hey, wait, don't I know you? You go to Stanford?"

"Berkeley. I'm visiting my sister over Spring Break. Not that you care."" She frowns at herself for offering up personal information, then finds herself staring at him. Tapping her extra ticket against her chin, she squints at his vaguely familiar face. "Did you actually think you could just show up and get in?"

"Last minute extra credit project. Who knew Intro to Film would be hard?" His grin hasn't slipped, merely shifted from casually friendly to downright disarming.

It should make her nervous, he should make her nervous with the tinglies running down her spine, but instead she relinquishes the ticket with a cool bow of her head. "Guess this is your lucky day."

"You're telling me." He slips into line next to her, not quite invading her personal space, just comfortably close amidst the crowd. "So, you wanna sit together?"

She tilts her head back and quirks an eyebrow. "You don't even know what movie I'm seeing."

He's still smiling. "I bet it's good."

"It could be terrible. It could be about zombie freaks attacking a small town where everyone's forced to dance till they burst into flames while singing in badly dubbed Japanese."

He shrugs. "Cool."

She scowls. "And then a meteor hits and the town collapses into a huge crater and the few survivors are forced to live the rest of their lives singing and dancing till their souls burn up."

He tilts his head to the side, considering. "Won't make for a boring essay, that's for sure."

"You're impossible." She tosses her hair over her shoulder. "And, don't take this the wrong way, but you're kind of a freak."

His smile lights up his eyes. "Looks like I'm in good company."

She laughs. He has no idea how big a freak she really is. Not that he'll ever know. Not that he could handle it if he did. Not that she was gonna tell him anything (else) about her life.

"I'm Connor," he says.

"I'm Dawn," she answers, "and you owe me the biggest tub of popcorn known to man, a cherry slushee, and a box of Raisinets."

"What? No Twizzlers?"

So perfectly Dawn and Buffy! ♥ ♥ ♥

I wonder how long it takes (if ever) before they make the connection? (The connection about how they are connected, not the other kind.)

Marvelous.
