This guy draws this comic.

It's bad. Normally, I don't care if people draw bad comics; it's their own business and it's not my fault they suck. What bothers me is how high and mighty he is about it. When he first started the Hero by Night project, he went on and on about how no one cared about super heroes anymore. No one read their comic books, no one remembered the heroes from the ninties (Booster Gold is my favorite thank you very much), but no one could stand up to the mighty tycoons that were set in place. He felt they were comic book Microsofts, cutting out the competition because of their legacy, not because of their interesting plots or characters.

He claimed he was going to stand up to the big name Super Hero idols and cut them down to size. He was going to make a hero comic that was modern, new, fresh, and interesting. He could do it. He's the man. His ideas are so much better than anyone elses.

The thing he fails to realize is those comic book "tycoons" are there because people like them. Granted, Aquaman sucks, but Superman? Batman? They stay and people love them because they're cool! It's not that Batman writers need to shut out competition for fear of being replaced by Duckman, it's that Batman already embodies the non-super hero by night loner angst bucket, and anyone who tries to follow that act gets booed off. Not by DC or Marvel, but by the audience.

Not only that, but Mr. Coffman seems to be ignoring the comics that are recent. Frank Miller is still alive. Sin City isn't brand new or anything, but it's not old. V for Vendetta and Watchmen came out a couple years ago, but they're not old. Fables and Y: The Last Man are still coming out. These things aren't tyrants. They don't have monopolies on the comic book industry. Yet according to its creator, Hero by Night is going to revolutionize comic books. It's going to be the greatest thing. It's going to get America back into comics (because lord knows no one reads Spiderman anymore).

His biggest flaw is that he's appealing to the fans of superheroes. The only people who would bother reading a comic about a superhero are the people who um I dunno, like them. Yeah, people see Batman movies and X Men movies and Superman, but most of them don't rush off to buy the comics afterwards. DJ Coffman is appealing to a crowd that likes the very things he says are horrible, that have grown into twisted ugly monsters with stale story lines and uninteresting characters. I have news for you, DJ Coffman. Hero by Night isn't as original and groundbreaking as you think. The premise for Hero by Night reminds me an awful lot of another superhero floating around in obscure nothing land. His name is The Phantom. Ever hear of him? Didja see that movie? Did you know how bad it was, and how totally unenthused I am about seeing a hyped up copy of him? Here's a picture for you to sleep on.

PS - You're a crappy artist, lolz.
