Back from Tokyo again. Last time we went, when having dinner with friends (who went to my college as exchange students), they said "you guys should go to a maid cafe while you're here!" ... so I dragged R to @home and he was not happy with me OH WELL ( Read more... )

Shepherd's Pie is pretty easy (though, yes, it is also very British). The version I've made in the past is the American version called "cottage pie" (made with beef):

- 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
- 1 onion chopped
- 1/2 cup chopped carrots
- 1/2 cup corn
- 1/2 cup peas
- three russet (baking) potatoes
- 1 stick butter
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt & pepper to taste

Pre-heat the oven to 300.

Peel and quarter the potatoes and boil in water until tender (about 20 minutes). While the potatoes are cooking, melt 4 Tablespoons butter (1/2 a stick) in large frying pan. Sauté onions and carrots in butter until tender over medium heat (10 mins).

Add ground beef and sauté until no longer pink. Season with salt and pepper to taste and add worcesterchire sauce. Add your peas and corn. Add half a cup of beef broth and cook, uncovered, over low heat for 10 minutes, adding more beef broth as necessary to keep moist.

Mash potatoes in bowl with remainder of butter, season to taste. (They'll be smoother if you use an electric beater to mash them.)

Pour the beef and vegetables into a baking dish and spread the mashed potatoes on top. Use a fork to make peaks so that the potatoes will brown nicely.

Cook until bubbling and brown (about 30 minutes). Broil for last few minutes if necessary to brown.

ooh, recipe★ I hope I can pull it off without killing someone. I managed to find a Japanese recipe that I was going to work off of (since it has the directions and cook times for cooking in mysterious Japanese ovens, which are small and sit on the counter like a microwave and puzzle me), which called it a "an American dish", so at least Japanese people have no idea it's British and my secret is safe. \o/

Said Japanese recipe also contains mushrooms, garlic, ketchup, soy sauce, herbs, and cheese. D: I am tempted to try this. If I add enough garlic no one will even notice if my food tastes bad. Instant foodfix.

Thank you for the recipe~ \o/
want anything in particular from Japan? I am terrible at buying souvenirs; I wish I could bring back green tea donuts from mister donut and eat them forever :\

D: What do you do with the ketchup? Is it used when cooking the beef?

Welcome~ ♥
Mmm... I donno. Possibly. /o\ I'm terrible at thinking when I haven't slept in a week.

yup, it goes with the Worcestershire sauce when preparing the beef~

I'm terrible at thinking in general. D: So when I go shopping I tend to ignore awesome/normal stuff in favor of "OH LOOK A STICKER WITH A BUNNY ON IT" or "OH BOY A PLASTIC DONUT OUT OF A 100 YEN MACHINE"
