Haha, no its not, Coney Island is part of Brooklyn. I LOOOOVVVE that place. The Mermaid Parade in the summer is the bomb. But sometimes I like to go in the winter to see it all empty except for a few really old Russian people.
I haven't been inside the freak show, but I've walked by a bunch of times. my grandmother has this awesome black and white photo she took there from the late 1950s or so.
They have this really disturbing game right around the corner from there called "Shoot The Freak", where you pay to shoot a guy (usually black, making me feel like this is some sort of bizarre racist performance) with a paintball gun.
Unfortunately, I think most of the classic old Coney Island stuff is getting demolished to build expensive condos this summer.
And sorry this is already so long but, Costa Rica?!? Jealous. Do you have a link about the program you want to do? You're right that being vegetarian in Central America, even vegan, is not that hard, there are beans and rice and tortillas and plantains everywhere you go.
Haha...I think I probably looked it up from where my school is in Brooklyn. Yes, I am very excited for the Mermaid Parade! It sounds great. Hm...Shoot the Freak does seem racist...that's a bit disturbing.
Demolished to make condos!!! What is wrong with people:(.
MMM., beans and rice and plantains....oh, yes, here is the website http://www.brooklyn.liu.edu/globalcollege/ That is the branch at my college..but it's called Global College....they do summer, and also full-term study abroad in Fall and Spring...you take classes and stuff....during the semester in Costa Rica, I hear they take you to lots of bordering countries. (they also go to South Africa (which, did you know is only one of five countries in the world with completely equal rights for gays), India, China and Japan.)
Lol, wow that flame-thrower thing is CRAZY. I mean, it's kinda a good idea in a weird way.. But yes, that is a cool fact about South Africa-I never would've pegged them for so gay-friendly.
Yes, escuela in Brooklyn, scholarship to go to Costa Rica. It is pretty exciting. Hopefully I'll be getting a shared apartment or a room in Brooklyn in the fall.
Hm, I'll definitely see if I can manage to get there...I don't know where geographically I will be, but I'll see. Hopefully I'll at least get a few chances to go to a beach-I hear the surf in Costa Rica is amazing.
No, I don't really speak much Spanish...I should, and I should have learned while I was growing up, but now will finally give me the opporunity to immerse myself in the language while taking classes, so I think I'll come back competant!:)

Not far from the border in Nicraragua is a really cool beach town called San Juan Del Sur, check it out if you can. ?Ya hablas espanol?
Don't think I knew that about South Africa... that country is definitely high on my list of places to see before I die. If you ever go, be careful not to get burned: http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/africa/9812/11/flame.thrower.car/
