Health, School, Pondering The Future

Apr 23, 2010 01:24

I've come down with something. Seasonal Allergies or a cold, or just plain exhausted. All I know is, I'm coughing, sneezing, and my nose is running like gangbusters. I spent most of today asleep.

Oh, and I just started hacking up gunk. Lovely.

School is . . . different. Life Drawing is fun, though the charchol and chalk dust gets to me, and my history professor has a grab you by the balls additude that I find refreshing and entertaining.

Anthropology, however, is getting to me. It's not that I don't find the subject interesting, it's the professor. He spends half to all of the class hour evangelicalizing that evolution is the only valid way for humans to have come into being. I've seen more debate than data. He also claims that he's not trying to convert anyone away from religion. Bullshit.

Amusingly, during the first class, he lamented that he always he ends up with so few students at the end of every qaurter and can't figure out why. Since there's no way he can be that dense (The example of Ron the Wannabe Shrink nonwithstanding) I've decided that he's making a point**. By creating a classroom enviroment like this, only the most hardcore or stubborn students are going to stay for the full qaurter. In other words, survival of the fittest.

While I am on suspension, I covered my bases by calling in sick today per procedure. So far, the Venue has not gotten back to me regarding said suspension and the week is nearly up. Douchebags.

The future. Both nesmith and doomcrab have given me some excellent advice, which can be boiled down as "Use your current free time to get shit done, pick a career and stick to it, and don't be afraid to work below education and experience." doomcrab also suggested training for something to keep me afloat and worry about career later.

That was what the bartending was supposed to do.

So, assuming the Venue decides to let me go, I have the following options. Most of these mean leaving school, unfortunutly.

Option 1: biting_moopie suggested seeing a career counselor. I do live near a department of employment branch and currently have nothing better to do aside from schoolwork

Option 2: An ex of mine works in the mailroom of the local HP facilty and she occasionally bugs me to come work with her. It does sound appealing, but apparently management is on kind of a revolving door. Plus, the company's website (she's actually a contractor employed by an outside company) doesn't actually have a listing for the mailroom.

Option 3: Vocational Training. The local city college offers a degree or certificate in Laser Technology (Mmm, lasers, thank you Real Genius) and drakonlily once noted that I seem to have a technican mindset. One of my favorite jobs was the paid internship where I built computers. I could probably build a laser with a little training. However, the certificate requires math and physics and we all have seen how well I do with that. MRI Technican seems to be in high demand and is a valid and interesting option, but again, that's just more time and money. I need to consider either of these carefully.

Option 4: Temp myself out like a mofo and hope something leads to permanancy.

Option 5: Stay on my current degree track and find something part time so I can stay in school and build up a portfolio. Load up on courses for summer and try to play catch up. I can't do much about math, but I can get back on track for English and with any luck, clear out all of GED except for the math** and english.

Option 6: Apply for unemployment and get through school on that. This is the least appealing option for me. I know that sounds weird, but its a matter of pride. I'm damn well capable of finding work (staying employed is another matter, but I digress), thank you very much and there's people who need it far more then I do.

If the Venue decides to keep me, then I'm good for the remaninder of the playoffs. After that, I have no idea what the procedure is. Presumably the Bartenders are tapped for the occasional summer concert but otherwise we're to find our own amusements. Option 5 would be good here.

*Hush. It keeps me from wanting to call him on his utter inability to see how he's alienating students left and right.

**Why Arts majors need to take Algebra and Stats is beyond me. You might make an arguement for Geometry for those of us who draw but Algebra is largely useless. Stats seems interesting though.
