Well, yes. The ONLY reason this is even in discussion right now is because series three just aired, so everyone's talking about the show in general, which leans its way to media reps asking leading questions, which then puts actors on the spot to either defend their words/opinions, or get accused of not caring about anything. It happens ALL THE TIME with pop culture. For fucks sake, Justin Bieber just got arrested for underage drinking and I somehow know about it. I couldn't care LESS about Justin Bieber, but I know about it because it was all over the internet in a matter of seconds.
The current media obsession with Sherlock is entirely due to its success in the ratings. The fanbase is what gives the show ratings, and fandom is a major part of that. Therefore, clearly the way to stir up the fanbase is to start slinging shit about fandom, and what better way to do that than to corner Amanda Abbington (who is already getting shit from people about her character) into making a statement that would piss people off? It's a genius in marketing, honestly. The unfortunate bit is the fall-out that's happening now, when people are genuinely upset about what's going down.
The good thing is, this fandom seems to be a little more mature than others, and the majority of this fanbase tends to lean towards intelligent people who will defend their stance 100%, but are also self-aware enough to realize what exactly is being done here. We're all being manipulated in a huge media hurricane, and we're all falling for it. Spectacularly.
Sigh.
It will blow over in about a month, probably even less. Once HLV hits PBS in the States next week, and all the media fall-out happens in the aftermath, we'll all be safely tucked behind our Tumblr and AO3 walls once more, theorizing on how John is going to act around Sherlock now that Sherlock has basically made it clear that he loves John without question, and what on earth a baby is going to do in this show.

Then it'll be onto Game of Thrones.
