Jack kept his face in the ice chest. He knew lying wasn't going to work, but then why had he gone along with it in the first place? He felt a headache coming on. This place, this mansion surrounded by unpenetrable walls, was feeling less like a haven where he could experience life again and be reunited with loves ones and more like a hell in which he had to face every sin he had committed and the lives he had affected.
Jack couldn't lie, but he had to be careful. He didn't want to scare Vincent, but he didn't want to color the truth too much, either-neither Vincent nor Gilbert were stupid and were far less naive than many of the boys their age.
"I did Vincent." Taking the blame, it was the least he could do.
"I didn't mean to, but I missed you, so I brought you here. I've seen your brother around, and if we wait here, he will eventually show up. He-" will probably not be your age, but . . .
Jack concentrated on spreading the jelly on the bread. He could not imagine Vincent without Gilbert right there beside him for more than only a few hours.
