There's a young teenaged Roman girl in the common room, nursing tea, and sighing to herself.

Young Lydia misses home. She misses her father, her siblings, her life in Rome.  She misses the servants who catered to her.  She misses the luxury of shopping, of buying silken togas, of being dressed by a slave's girl's expert hands.

Her dress is in ( Read more... )

Celebrimbor is passing through and sees her, and though he's disappointed to see that she isn't back to her usual age yet he goes over to her. "Hello, Lydia."

She looks up. "Oh, hello Sir." She finds a smile, stands, and curseys.

Augh, he doesn't like when she calls him 'sir,' they're supposed to know each other too well for that. "Are you settling in well?"

"I've ...." she looks down. "It's difficult, to be truthful, sir."

Why is she so straightforward? She barely knows him, but he is so kind to her, and so gentle, and he's made her feel safe.

He nods sympathetically. "It's a very strange place. It was difficult for me to get used to as well." Understatement of the century, but still true.

"Tell me what happened, when you arrived? I mean, how was it for you? Did you make friends?" She remains standing, feeling a little unsure. This man is so nice, so handsome... she's a bit awed that he's talking to her.

"Um..." He takes a deep breath, attempting to figure out how to talk about that without actually talking about it. "Yes, I made some very good friends when I arrived. I wouldn't want to give them up even if I could go back."

"Oh, lucky you," she replies with a small smile. "I guess I have to hope I will have the same fate." Her toga slips, a little, she forces it back on her shoulder, properly. "I'm sorry, I'm not used to dressing without help..."

"You were helped to dress?" He's surprised by that, he's never heard of someone requiring assitance once they were old enough to manage for themself. "You do get used to it eventually, being here. It's started to feel...almost like home, for me."

"Well ---" She feels very stupid and unable, suddenly. "Maybe what you wear is easier to deal with."

"Maybe." He probably wouldn't know what to do with a toga at all.

And neither does she, really. Young Patricians have people who handle such trifles for them. "I must be a fright, I'm so sorry..."

"No, you're fine. Though, if you wanted, I'm sure we could find something that would be easier to wear without help."

"Oh, please, that would be wonderful," she replies, and the relief is obvious in her expression. "I keep on tripping on this thing..."

He thinks briefly of Lydia's dresses in their room, and decides that would probably be too complicated to spring on her as well. "Sometimes you can still find things in the closets, we can look if you want."

She probably would have no idea what to do with the corsets and the zippers would befuddle her quite a bit. "Just like that? Won't who ever owns this place mind?"
