The Week That Would Not End

My local vegetable market had celeriac today, for the first time ever! I was so excited, I had to buy one. I'd love to do a gratin, but with this heat I'm thinking potato and celeriac mash. Ooooh yay! And, damn are these things ugly.

So, I'm glad this week is over. It had its ups and its downs, but mostly it was just reeeeally looooong. Monday went by fairly quickly, because we went to lunch at Applebee's to celebrate a coworker's birthday. That broke up the day nicely. But Tuesday and Wednesday were really slow workwise, and took forever to end. Thursday was busy, plus I left early to go to the gynecologist, so that day whizzed by. But today was right back to slowness. Egads.

Food talk!

Wednesday evening we got to go to the boss's country club again for dinner, to celebrate the same coworker's birthday, and we ladies had a great time! (I have to say, they are a fun bunch.) I had, as an appetizer, Italian long hot peppers which were fried, then placed in a dish with sundried tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and a ton of olive oil, and baked until meltingly soft. It was good, but the cheese seemed out of place, and there was an inch of oil in that dish. Sheesh. But with a chunk of Italian bread? Quite a tasty starter. My main dish was their pasta of the day - orrechiette with sausage, broccoli rabe and white beans in a garlic and oil sauce. Minus the sausage, of course. It was tasty, but by far the best thing I had there that night was the bartender's special concoction. I told him I wanted something martini-like, but fruity and delicious - and he said he knew just the thing. What he gave me was like heaven trapped in a viscous pink liquid. I had to return for more. It consisted of: vodka; Malibu rum; peach schnapps; some sort of brandy, I think blackberry; the teensiest splash of cranberry juice; an equally teensy splash of pineapple juice; I lost track at this point - there was more, but I couldn't tell what all was getting dumped in there. I'll tell you what though, it was incredible. I can't wait to go back and have another one or three. (Hellooooo Christmas party!) Dessert, sadly, was not so hot. It was coconut sorbet served in a half coconut shell with two tiny biscotti and a slice of pineapple. It sounds terribly fancy, but the sorbet was grainy, which totally turned me off - horrible mouth feel. And the biscotti were way too sweet to be called biscotti. I should have skipped dessert and had a third pink martini-thing instead. ;o)

So on Thursday I had a polyp removed from my cervix. Oh joy of joys. If anything good can possibly be said of my trip to the gynecologist, it would be that she had me in and out of there in 15 minutes flat - quite possibly a new world's record! Impressive. And I'm glad to have the thing gone, even if it will be back in another couple of years...

So, besides being treated to all sorts of wonderful meals lately, the job really has been going well. I've been getting lots of positive feedback the last couple of weeks, and I'm looking forward to review time. (Pity we didn't discuss a three- or six-month review when I was hired. Oh well.) I got to work two days at this year's Fancy Food Show at the Javits Center, which was so cool. Even cooler was that Mike Colamecca came to interview my boss for his radio show, and I got to listen in! I was so excited, I jumped up and down like a preteen at a Hannah Montana show! (That was for you, Peter.)

Seeing as this post is quickly becoming rather scatterbrained, methinks I'll end it here. I'm plum tuckered. Here's to a lovely weekend - may it feel just as long as the work week did.
