“Alli, come back!”
The flying squirrel paused at the top of the fence to look back down at Castiel. “But she’s so pretty,” Allison said, tail waving excitedly. Castiel sighed.
“I don’t care how pretty you think she is, you need to come down from there.”
Ears back, Alli curled her tail in close to her body in defiance. “No.”
Frowning, Castiel pulled himself up on the ledge, nearly hugging the fence to keep his balance. “I cannot believe this,” he muttered. Then, a bit louder as he got closer to where his daemon was perched on the fence, “What’s gotten into you?”
“Look!” Alli squeaked, tail thrashing as she jabbed one tiny paw out to the other side. Castiel sighed, but carefully pulled himself up as far as he could to peer over the top of the fence. There were several daemons in the park on the other side of the fence, but only one of them was near a young man.
She was a large barn owl, a soft tawny brown with white. Castiel could admit that she was lovely, but he really didn’t see why she had gotten Alli so excited. Then the owl’s human turned to talk to one of the women nearby and Castiel’s breath hitched in his chest.
The man was beautiful. Dark sandy brown hair and dark eyes, broad shoulders and fine features. He was easily the most handsome man Castiel had seen in a long while, perhaps ever. A light weight landed on his head and Allison tugged at his hair.
“See? See?”
“Yeah,” he breathed. “Yeah, I see.”
He lowered himself down and made his way off of the ledge, Alli still nestled in his hair. Once he was safely back on the ground, she jumped down to his shoulder and he lifted a hand for her to hold on to.
“So, can we go meet them?” she asked, rubbing her cheek on Castiel’s thumb.
“I’d like to,” he said.
“But?” Alli prompted.
“But…I don’t know,” Castiel sighed. “I’m just…”
“Scared. That’s what you are.” Alli frowned as best she could, eyes narrowing and tail flipping back and forth. “You’re scared he won’t like you.”
There was no use in trying to lie to his daemon, so Castiel just nodded. Allison chattered wordlessly at him, a clear admonishment. “It’s happened before!” Castiel protested.
“Jacob and Victoria are hardly a yardstick to measure everyone else up against,” Alli said. “What about Neal and Risa? And Brian and Felicia?”
Castiel sighed. “I suppose.”
“Good. Now, go introduce us. Or I’ll do it,” Alli threatened. Castiel eyed her for a moment, eventually deciding that she was actually serious about it.
“You haven’t even talked to his daemon,” Castiel muttered, but he was turning to find a gate or something to get into the park anyway. Allison ran up his arm and pulled herself up onto the top of his head once more.
“Don’t have to,” she said primly. “I know I’ll like her.”
“Let’s just hope she likes you, too.” Castiel paused, hand on the latch of the gate he’d found. “Thanks, Alli.”
“Anytime,” she said. “Can we go in, now?”
Castiel smiled a bit. “Yeah,” he said and opened the park gate.

“Dean.”
Dean grinned an apology at Jo before turning to his daemon. “Kara, what…” he trailed off, blinking at the tiny squirrel that was edging closer and closer to Kara. “Oh. Hello.”
The squirrel glanced up at him. “Hello,” she said, tail flicking. “You need to talk to Castiel.” Then she turned back to Kara. “I’m Allison.”
“Hello, Allison,” Kara rumbled, settling down a bit to be more on a level with the squirrel. “I am Kara.”
“Right,” Dean muttered. “So, where’s this Castiel dude?”
“Ah, that would be me,” a low voice said and Dean’s head jerked up.
“Oh,” he said. Wild, dark hair and intense blue eyes and Dean was having a hard time focusing on anything else. “You are…”
“Castiel,” the guy said.
“Castiel,” Dean echoed. “I’m Dean.”
“Hello, Dean.”
“Hey.”
They were quiet for a moment and then Dean dropped his eyes to where their daemons had inched closer, close enough that any closer and they would be touching, Allison stretched up to whisper into Kara’s ear.
“I like burgers,” Dean blurted, looking away from the daemons but not back at Castiel.
“Oh?”
“You are hopeless,” Allison interjected. “Cas. Dean said he likes burgers. Perhaps you should ask him if he would like to join us for lunch.”
Dean blushed and saw Castiel shift a bit out of the corner of his eye. “Ah, yes. Uh, if you would like to, that is,” the guy said quickly.
Kara hopped up onto Dean’s knee to look up at Castiel. “We would love to,” she said. Dean nodded.
“Yeah, sure.”
And then Castiel smiled at him, a soft, tentative, barely-there thing, but it made Dean’s heart do this weird half-thump twisty movement.
“Good.”
Dean was in full agreement.
