As he neared the field, he saw a familiar figure sitting at the bench.
"Yamada!"
Chinen walked towards Yamada.
"Hey Yamada-kun! Im the person who messaged you. You can call me Chii"
Chinen smiled.
Yamada looked up at Chinen.
"Oh…hi"
"Ehh? You don't remember me?"
Chinen asked.
"Eto, gomen, have i seen you before?"
Yamada replied in surprise.
Chinen's face fell.
"Eh, i was the Hikaru was talking to the other day. The day you did the homerun"
Yamada scratched his head.
"Sou….AH! That boy! Heh sorry, i'm a bit you know, blur"
"Daijobu daijobu."
"YO CHII! Ohayo!"
Daiki shouted from afar.
"Oh Dai-chan!!"
Chinen exclaimed, waving back to him.
After all the teammates have settled down, they started the usual warm-up practise before the match.
Their coach came shortly after, gave them the batting line-up and they started the match.
Chinen was in an extremely good mood that day.
And for the first time in his life, coach has given him the honor of being first batter and first baser, the position he had always wanted.
It was his turn to bat.
"Gambatte Chii!"
Daiki and Ryutaro cheered him on as he walked to the plate.
Chinen turned to look at them.
From the corner of his eye, he saw Yamada beside Daiki, smiling at him.
Chinen felt his heart miss a beat.
He told himself to concentrate.
"Haii! YOSH!"
Chinen stood at the plate, ready to bat.
*CRACK!*
It's a two base hit!
That match seemed to be the best match of not just Chinen's but Daiki's and Ryutaro's life as well.
They managed to perform beyond expectation and for the first time, Coach praised them.
Well, on the other hand. Yamada was not doing as well.
He got scoldings from coach for not concentrating and was sent to run 20 rounds around the field as punishment.
Chinen, Daiki and Ryutaro, being the captain and assistant decided to wait until Yamada finished his 20 rounds.
Chinen felt his heart gave another tug as he saw Yamada's pale face.
"Sighs, 20 rounds. Neh Dai-chan. Remember that time, we had to do 50 rounds. We took the entire training to run"
Chinen turned to Daiki, ignoring the tug.
"Hai! Coach always do that do us neh. Ryu-chan as well"
Daiki replied.
"At least it improves our stamina. Haha look we're the three fastest in school for the yearly marathon"
Ryutaro added.
They sat at the beach, all talking about how their coach had torture them during training and how worth it it was.
Yamada had finally finished running his rounds and was walking back to the bench.
"Yamada-kun! Join us for lunch?"
Daiki stood up, passing him his bottle of water.
"Haii, sure"
He said between pants.
They packed their stuff and left to the nearby cafe.
They talked a lot during lunch and discussed about their school as well.
Chinen, Daiki and Ryutaro were from an all boys school whereas Yamada was from a co-ed school.
They had decided that after every weekend matches, they would go to the cafe to study together.
That night, when Chinen reached home, he received a text message from Daiki.
"Chii! Yamada-kun messaged me asking if i want to go out with him tomorrow to study! You wanna come"
The message read.
"Eh…i didn't receive any message from Yamada-kun about that. You guys go ahead"
He replied.
Minutes later, he received another text message. This time from Yamada.
"Join us tomorrow! (: "
Chinen smiled and replied
"Haii! Mata Ashita :)"
They went to the library the next day to study.
Chinen couldn't help but notice that Yamada was exceptionally close to Daiki.
They had only met for one day but were talking as though they knew each other for a very long time.
"Chii! Why are you so quiet today!"
Daiki wrapped his arm about Chinen's shoulder.
"Eh?"
Chinen looked up, to see Yamada peering at him opposite the table.
"Well, I-just…wanna concentrate on studying. You know, common test is coming soon"
Chinen said before continuing his work.
It was already one week since they met.
"Nehh! You guys are so mean. You three go out to study without telling me"
Ryutaro pouted at both of them during gym session one day.
"Eh! We did! You just didn't reply our messages Ryu-chan."
"Yeah you always don't reply our messages!"
Daiki added.
Ryutaro pouts again.
"Well that's not my fault! My phone is not with me all the time!"
Chinen sighed.
"Hey Chii! What do you think about Yamada-kun?"
Daiki asked Chinen later on that day.
"Eh? I don't know. What about you. You seem pretty close to him"
Chinen replied.
"Ahh…I think i like him…."
Daiki replied softly, not wanting the rest of the teammates to hear this latest news.
"EHHH! but you have Takaki already!"
Chinen replied.
"I know I know! I still love Takaki okay!"
"Oh gosh! You're talking about liking guys again Dai-chan!"
Ryutaro walked over.
"Yes yes, we are, and we know you are extremely straight and will never fall for a guy."
Chinen added.
"Good that you know eh. Don't tell me you are falling for Yamada-kun!"
Ryutaro asked Chinen.
"EH! Since when! Dai-chan was the one who said he likes him!"
Chinen fought back, with a slight blush on his face.
Just then, they heard a loud noise.
"Chii! Time to go! The school's closing"
Yuto said over to them as the other teammates packed their bags, ready to leave school.
"Haii! Oh let's go"
Chinen dragged Ryutaro and Daiki up from their sitting positions as they packed and got ready to go home.
