Recent creative forays, with mixed success:

Cylon Army Cupcakes:
For the BSG season premier party my friend threw. They were spicy chocolate with cream cheese frosting decorated with classic style cylon heads in two tone gray-lavender frosting and red hots for eyes. Turns out icing cupcakes and drawing in frosting is harder than it looks! I didn't account for the way crumbs would make my "canvas" irregular. And boy were these cakes crumbly; this could have been largely avoided if I went out and bought cupcake wrappers before baking. When I took them out of the baking tray, almost all of them fell apart. Also, my spice combo didn't come out as hoped. The recipe called for cayenne and cinnamon. I used some premixed spice selection of cinnamon, nutmeg, and etc. which in the end overwhelming I think. Now I love me some spicy food but I have to say the proportion of cayenne was too much, not that it burned (it did, but pleasantly so) but again, the flavor was more gross that gourmet. I mostly liked them but I couldn't stomach more than one in a sitting.

Valentine's Decor:
Origami hearts grommetted then strung on red ribbon. Although they were a pain to make (I have a hard time visualizing written directions. I do much better when someone shows me how to make things.) they end result was charming I think. I may just leave these up all year. (Extra: I was on the phone while taking this picture, hence the cocked head and shoulder in my ear.)

Valentine's gift:

Tanuki Mario applique fleece neck gaiter. For my man, his favorite Mario incarnation as a (sort of) scarf! I was so pleased with this. I took cues from the 8-bit game's color scheme and grid format for the fabric and cut each piece of the applique from felt. I ended up sewing the pieces together which was time consuming but well worth it. I'm hoping he'll wear it snowboarding so I can have some free advertising so he can keep warm : P
