So my commuter bike broke a seat stay just as I was researching add-on electric motors. At first I was at a loss, because I still hate the fact that I drive a smoky old gas-burner to work every morning. It just galls me that I burn a gallon of gas a day going back and forth, and that I spend $250 a year to park three blocks away (a walk that used to be my total commute). I had long since figured out that biking in every day is simply not going to work. It's tiring, and for half the year it's just too damned hot. Showing up to work exhausted and sweaty just wasn't getting it. The electric assist was my last-ditch effort at making biking to work a realistic goal. Then the frame broke.
But then I started doing some more homework. I had done some digging around before, and I had heard good things about this little gadget called the eGO. I have seen one around campus, and it looked like a cool little scooter. I found out that a local shop called
Scooternerds has them for sale, and I was actually considering spending about $1,500 for one, when good old Craigslist threw me a bone. A guy down in Georgia was selling a used one for $500.
This is now mine...
I don't have it yet. I contacted the guy and was happy with what I heard, so I asked my father-in-law if he would go pick it up for me. It's done. The bike is now at his house. Now I just gotta get it into my hot little hands and I can not only use electricity to mow my yard, but also to commute to work. Erin thinks it's fugly, and I won't argue with that, but hey, I'm a nerd and a green freak. I'll own it happily.
It doesn't require licensing in NC, but it's got a mount for a European-style square license plate...
I'm thinking about getting a faux license plate that says...
I can't wait to ride this sweet little baby to work for a few cents a day and park it right in my office with me.
