The flickering glow from the television cast a pale light over the room, giving everything a sickly, washed out look. Wilson sat on the sofa, peering intently into the white takeout box he was eating from. He didn't have to look at the TV. Vertigo was on. It usually was these days.

The first time he saw the film, he'd been in college. A girl in one of his labs had introduced him to the wonders of Hitchcock and this film in particular had become an instant favorite, kind of a comfort movie to him. At the time, he thought it would be fun to keep track of how many times he'd seen it, but he'd lost count somewhere in the 240s, and that was more than fifteen years ago.

Suddenly, the television clicked off, leaving Wilson in complete darkness. Assuming that he'd be long asleep by then, he had programmed it to turn off by itself at two in the morning. He ought to have known better; he wasn't sleeping very well lately.

Not bothering to refrigerate his leftovers, Wilson set his takeout box on the coffee table and stretched out on the sofa, facing the back of it. He supposed he never would sleep if he didn't at least give it a try...
