Eulogy: Batman: Brave and the Bold

Aug 26, 2010 11:44

Okay, I lied.  This has nothing to do with Young Justice.  This has to do with Brave and the Bold.  I may be a bit late to the party on this one, but nobody bothered to tell me.

What do you MEAN Batman: Brave and the Bold is being CANCELLED?!

Okay, sure we still have a season and a half to go (which could take years to air, considering their snail's-pace airing schedule), but... but... this was the second greatest Batman cartoon of all time.  Maybe even one of the greatest cartoons of all time, superhero-related or not.  And now it's being pulled to make room for yet ANOTHER "dark" interpretation of Batman (or so says the show's producer)?  How many "dark" interpretations do we need?   The movie series and the mainstream comics have more than enough "dark" for me, thanks!

Part of the reason I love Brave and the Bold is because it ISN'T dark.  It's unique.  It's fun, and yet it still manages to treat the characters with respect.  It made me love characters that I'd previously been indifferent about, like Jaime "Blue Beetle" Reyes and Aquaman (especially Aquaman).

The best part is how darn versatile the show manages to be without losing any quality.  It can go from silly ("Mayhem of the Music Meister!") to dead serious ("Chill of the Night!"), and it still works.  The only other cartoon I've seen with that kind of versatility is Teen Titans, which was also cancelled way before its time.

Honestly, DC, your cartoons and related comic books were the only good things you still had going for you.  Why are you ruining this, too?

I'm still very much looking forward to Young Justice in November.  But  it's highly doubtful that it will ever measure up to the impossibly high bar set by the excellent, the hilarious, the incomparable Brave and the Bold.  If you must leave us, may you R.I.P., you very special show.

rage, what the?!, sad face, batman: brave and the bold
