Roots!

My Mom and I are sharing the cost for a subscription to Ancestry.com so I can research our family background. My Dad's side is easy because apparently someone has already done this. We can trace back to our ancestor from scotland. My Mom's side... not easy! I'm looking for my Great-Grandfather, George Harrison Crego. Don't know exactly when he was born, or where, but apparently he was in the Michigan Infantry in the civil war. 23rd regiment, Company "G". Hey, maybe he was the boogie-woogie bugle boy! I am trying to figure out who his parents were and I'm not having any luck at this point.

I'm learning to appreciate bureacracy a little more. I wish they had kept better records back then! They really only started getting good and centralizing records about toward the 1900's. When you start getting back into the mid or earlier 1800's things are a lot more sketchy!

I'm also prodding Mom to give me as much information as she can dredge up. Apparently GH died when she was around 5, which would have been 1924ish. And he died in CA! She said that her father complained he wasn't a good provider for their family. So I'm looking for some shiftless bum that probably didn't own land. :p

My advise to all alive now, leave behind records!

Nothing fancy, he doesn't try to market time, doesn't really actively manage his investments, he does it through diversification.
