So, today on Facebook, someone posted this story about this ADORABLE LITTLE BOY in a Daphne (from Scooby Doo) costume. Apparently, his mom was totally cool with the costume, but some other kids' moms decided that making a 5-year-old feel embarrassed about costume choice was the best way to handle such a "radical" situation.
My son is gay. Or he’s not. I don’t care. He is still my son. And he is 5. And I am his mother. And if you have a problem with anything mentioned above, I don’t want to know you. First off, PROPS to this kid's mom.
Secondly, I would love to have a sign above my head that said something just like that paragraph. Not because I run into tons of rampant homophobes that wave picket signs and shout slurs. OH NO. I run into the WAY MORE ANNOYING kind of homophobes.
You know who I'm talking about. The people who are all like, "I just don't think it's natural" or "Well, the Bible says that it's wrong" or -- and this is my favorite -- "I just don't want to think about it" and use those reasons to justify gross stereotyping and support for bigoted policies. Most of the time, these people have clearly never had a serious discussion about homosexuality and WHAT IT ACTUALLY IS. Rather, they base their prejudices on whatever their parents told them and cement their views that way. Whenever they are confronted by an example of this Crazy Alternative Lifestyle, instead of investigating to see what it means to be homosexual, they simply revert to what they learned as a kid, when their parents scared them into obeying social norms.
And then they take that fear of the unknown and use it to judge little five-year-old boys who just want to dress up as a FREAKING CARTOON CHARACTER for Halloween.
