The floor is falling...

Kayti and I got to Remington's Downtown right around 8p. I could hear The Dog and Everything start as we were walking in. They are a band from Chicago, where everyone seems to be coming from these days, I guess Chicago is the new Seattle? Anyway, they are good, I like them... I've seen them live a couple times now. (and now I'm just realizing I forgot to get the shirt I wanted, they were only $10, what a bargain!)

After they were done I went over and talked to Dom for a while, she used to do all of happyendings merch sales, but lately she's been busy and I hadn't seen her in a while. She had on this cute hoodie she made that day. She did do merch last night, I'm not sure if she's only going to do local shows now or what??

Minutes Too Far came on next, which I was upset about, because the show had 3 opening bands before happyendings. I wanted MTF to play 3rd, so I just assumed they were. Oh well, they played awesome and I spoke to Blake and Kris after everyone else played. MTF are playing in OKC tonight and I wish I could go. The guys are incredible. They are working on an album, which tentatively has a July release, but that will get pushed back, I'm sure.

Greenwheel was third, they are the only band that played last night that I had never seen before. I think they are from St. Louis, I'd heard of them, but had never heard them. They were good, I didn't see any of their CD's there or I would have picked one up.

Christa made it about halfway through Greenwheel, she wanted to see The Dog and Everything, but she had to close at work.

happyendings were awesome as always. They did a few older songs, too. The last couple of shows I have been to they have only played the new stuff from the album that's not out yet. I've heard them all, of course, but it's nice to hear an older song once in a while, too.

All of the bands did an excellent job, BUT... here's the rant. That place SUCKS! If happyendings plays there again, I'll go, but they are about the only ones that would get me in that place again. The acoustics are TERRIBLE, it sounds like you are in a can, it's like a giant cave, big and open and sound bouncing everywhere. Sound bouncing can be good, but not when it's bouncing off the tin duct work and windows and little else. The stage sits behind a huge mass of duct work in the ceiling and if you are in front of that duct work it's OK, but in front of it sounds terrible and most of the venue is in front of it. The three opening bands dealt with feedback and a few other sound issues, that I blame on the venue as well. But the worst, the most ludicrous event of the night was when management came on stage, not once, not twice, but three times in the middle of happyendings set to tell everyone not to jump or the floor will collapse? WHAT?!?! Why on earth did you agree to a show with he when you know the floor hasn't been repaired? happyendings encourages, even asks the audience to jump and get crazy. A happyendings show without jumping is like a Soy Chai Latte without the Chai. Let me say... NEVER did they announce before the show, tell people at the door, post signs...nothing to indicate we were not supposed to jump. We all knew the floor in the place had recently collapsed, but we all assumed it had been properly fixed. Why would they have a show if it hadn't? Brannon, after the third interruption, said "if you interrupt our show one more time happyendings will NEVER play this venue again." I doubt they will anyway!

Later, I was talking to Little and he told us they arrived at the venue at noon yesterday, to practice (they lost their practice space). When they got there, there was NO STAGE!!! The crew from the venue had to go to another club that had recently closed, tear down their stage and rebuild it in Remington's DT. The lighting wasn't up, nothing was ready for these guys to play, sound check, nothing! So, no stage, floor on the verge of collapse, and management interrupting bands... I wouldn't let any band I managed play there. This venue also had more security than the last show large venue show I went to. This place held 600 people, I'll bet they had a security person for about every 20, they were EVERYWHERE. But they really didn't do anything at all?! Blah!

In the end all of the bands did a fantastic job, especially for all the crap they had to go through before and during their show.
