It appears to me that Biblical "stewardship" involves much more giving than saving. I cannot find any verses to support the following ideas, which have a contradictory verse listed after them:
1. Churches should protect themselves from evil people, ungrateful people, or "undeserving" people who would take from us. "But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also." Matt 6:39
2. If we judge that someone is not deserving of our help, we shouldn't help them. "35But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked." Luke 6
3. Allowing undeserving people to take from us is "bad stewardship." " 21Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." Matt 19:21
4. If we protect the church's money specifically from poor people, the church will do better financially, in numbers, and spiritually, over time. "He who gives to the poor will never want, but he who shuts his eyes will have many curses." Proverbs 28:27
5. If we help people "too much," we might end up not having enough for ourselves. "I have been young and now I am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his descendants begging bread." Psalm 37:25
6. If we help "too many" people, and for whatever reason, God does not reward us, and we actually end up not having all the things we would like to have, then that should not have happened, because God would rather let us keep what is "ours" than have us waste our money on undeserving people. "Better is a little with righteousness than great income with injustice." Proverbs 16:8 "9 I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens, 10 for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine. 12 If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it." Psalms 50
7. If a person is poor, that means they must have done something wrong to deserve it, or they must have wasted their money. "Remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth." Deuteronomy 8:18 Also, Job became extremely poor, but he did not do anything to deserve it.
8. If we, ourselves, become poor, then it might have happened because we helped too many people. "He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done." Prov. 19:17
9. If poor people ask us for money "too often," then that is Satan trying to bring us down, not God testing our love. "2Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. 3Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering." Heb 13
10. Saving money is inherently good. Whenever we can, we should save our money instead of letting it go. " 1Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. 2Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. 3Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. 4Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. 5You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter." James 5
