Step #3 - Character Backstory

Sep 30, 2013 16:42

This is a two-part post. The first part is available to everyone since it is just my general thought process. The second part will be friends-only as it is specific to my story.

Character backstory is the information that’s important to the author writing the story but not necessarily to the reader reading the story. I think that’s one of the main attractions of writing fanfiction. We don’t have to worry about the character’s backstory. Everyone who reads the book or watches the show knows the hero is angry and bitter because of his father issues or the heroine is clingy and too eager to please because she lost both of her parents when she was a baby.  Since we already understand the world, we don’t have to explain why the characters act a certain way in specific situations.

Building and sharing character backstory is a delicate balancing act. I want to share enough information so that my characters’ actions are understandable but not so much information that you’re bored reading about their pasts.  This is a weak area for me. I like my characters so I enjoy writing about them. Readers may not love reading about their history as much as I do. I’m counting on you to curb me when I go too far into their histories and also when I’m not giving you enough of their background.

The next post is specific to my characters’ background. It’s a friends-only post so only those readers who are approved as friends will even see the post.

Thank you,
Paly
