It is a difficult area.

However, we live in a world where there are different levels within society and it is expected that butlers and other staff refer to their lords with respect. Some lords do not like this rule and most seem to be those from new money and not used to high society's way and how others would view it as rude and a slap in the lord's face if the staff didn't add some sort of honorific.

If you absolutely must drop the honorific, do so in the privacy of the lord's rooms or home and not where others will judge either of you.

Sounds logical. I mean, I've been asked by Atsushi-sama that I'd leave it out, but sometimes it just feels awkward not to say it. But you're right, I should use the honoricis in public which I usually do when he's not around, though journals are a different thing.

It has confused me a bit as well, especially since Oishi-sama requested it - what I've tried is calling them what they wish to be called when speaking to them or in private, and still referring to them as 'sama' everywhere else. It seems to work...

Mm. I guess it should have been an obvious answer to the problem, but my brain seems to be selective on me today and every other day.

That's alright, Akazawa-san, I'm happy to help.

In private, do what they want in public always be respectful if you want high butler rankings. And as a bonus if they don't like it and they're totally lame you can annoy them just by doing your job.

... I just wouldn't really want to annoy anyone except maybe Atobe-sama and Mizuki-sama, but.
