Now, I have biases just like any other human, or artist specifically, so let me throw out a thought that may or may not surprise you.
I am so tired of seeing wolves on dA.
There. Feels better just saying it aloud. I don't know how the trend started, or what draws people to them. I don't particularly care, as that's not my business, nor should I involve myself in it. People draw what they like, I guess, (or what they feel is the "in" thing that will gain them popularity.) : / I'm not insisting people stop drawing wolves, but I honestly don't understand how so many people can be into it. *SHRUG*
Truth is, I've never had a soft spot for wolves. This is probably why I get a wee bit tired of hearing people relate my pallanophs to wolves. Honestly, if you really want to see a canine that inspired them, please do look at sighthounds, particularly the borzoi. I love borzoi; their forms are so exaggerated and yet plausible, and it's that sort of extreme appearance that drove my pallanoph species further. For the record, since someone is bound to ask (this should be on dA then, shouldn't it?) pallanophs are NOT a hybrid species, and evolved naturally from a different branch in this "alternative earth" than any other mammals we know of. Meaning, I wouldn't be able to theorize what their closest living relatives would likely be on this world. They are large, intelligent apex predators with an opportunistic, omnivorous diet, (mostly meat based, but supplemented with a wide range of plant material) and take a long time to raise their young. Their population numbers do not rise rapidly, as females usually only have one cub at a time, and multiple births are very rare.
All of that being said, I'm sorely tempted, in this alternative earth, to leave out the question of wolves entirely. If the ranges of pallanophs and wolves were to overlap, the resulting shortage of prey animals would mean the much larger pallanophs would take to hunting wolves. Sorry, kids.... but if there are going to be any sort of canines logically existing in this world, they're going to have to be much smaller and keep well out of the way. (Unless I'm missing something?)
Also, since I've thrown that idea out there, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. I'm just rambling aloud, so I may have missed some points of logic relevant to the thought process here. HA.
In other news, the first cover project for Orion has been tentatively completed. Just waiting to hear if they have any edits/tweaks they'd like me to make. Hope they'll be minimal, so fingers crossed!!!
