But if you flip a coin twice and it comes up heads both times, what's the probability it will be heads the third time? One-half, of course.
I do however believe in a generalized concept of karma. Not cosmic karma, but a more unfantastic version just based on probability.
There's usually some risk associated with every "negative" action one takes*. Tailgating, shoplifting, being rude to one's mother, etc. Purely due to statistics, someone who commits more negative acts (and correspondingly looks like an asshole) are more likely to suffer the consequences of risk.
*There's risk associated with everything; however, in this case I mean that going with the flow and following the prevailing expected behavior of society is safer. Tailgating is more dangerous than maintaining a two-second gap; shoplifting is more dangerous than paying for one's purchases.
