job offer - take it or leave it?

Dec 03, 2004 17:22

I should've mentioned earlier that I got a call yesterday from Merry Hill, the pre-school I applied for a job as a teacher's assistant at, and they offered me a job. I'm really torn about what to do.

The Offer:I would have a full time job (10am to 6pm) working as a teacher's assistant, going between two classrooms. The infant classroom has 4 ( Read more... )

I kinda think you hit the nail on the head. Why take a job that pays less, has more stress, and you won't really benefit from in the future? Seriously. $8.50 for a TA? On the East Coast?? Jeez. I've done data entry that pays more than that and it's a no experience required except the ability to type. They're putting children into your hands and that is all they can pay you?

Yeah, that's my opinion too. I kinda just wanted it re-inforced. Thanks. =)

yeah good idea. If anything maybe you can haggle them into giving you more money by telling them that you don't need their insurance or vacation time.

What insurance do you have now????? I want that!! $3 prescriptions???

Plus it seems like the school is making enough money to pay you more than $8.50/hr. Pre-Pregnant women putting their kids on the waiting list?? That's a new one...

It does seem like they should be making enough money as it is. For a lot of good preschools that have good programs and low teacher/child ratios pre-pregnant women put their to-be kids on the list. People are a little crazy like that.

I've been thinking about this for a few days, baby girl. I think, (like I told you) that if you can negotiate for more, great. The hours will be far superior to anything you will get waitressing, and you'll have snow days off, guarenteed.

I think it sounds like a pretty good deal. ok, the pay sucks, but everything else seems to be there. hours, a job that you'd like (although it's sort of stressful) health insurance (yours will run out in 6 months, right?). Negotiate for more pay!

by the way (I slept on this one...)

If you ever go for another job "Teacher's Assistant in Private Nursery School" looks more impressive than "Waitressing". That's how it would benefit you in the future. If you got glowing reveiws from someone who watched you care for children, it would carry more weight than a glowing reveiw from someone who supervised you while you waited tables. Know what I mean?

The fact that having teacher's assistant on my resume looks a lot better than a waitress is one of the few perks. But I already have that on my resume. And what would that matter if I'm in college and for now, until I finish, am only going to have jobs working as a waitress because that's what pays the most? We'll see.

I'm definitely going to try to negotiate for more.
As for hours, waitressing hours are almost always better. Waitstaff tend to work 6 hour or so shifts, rather than the 8 I'd work at the school. I won't have snow days off. The staff manual says that when Newtown schools are closed, we open at 8, instead of 6:30. Essentially the only days we get off are Thanksgiving, the Friday after, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Christmas Day. Health insurance isn't a big deal to me because I have it for another six months. In six months, if it's a big issue, I can find another job that will give me health benefits, but right now I'm not worried about that. They've simply gotta give me more money or I won't take the job.
(Plus! I won't be able to get my lip pierced if I work at a school. As a waitress, it wouldn't matter.)
