The women were assessed, then took psychological tests. The Toronto based researchers found that those rated the prettiest were also to most obsessed with being thin and were more self-conscious and hyper-critical of themselves. The researchers speculate that because naturally pretty girls get so much praise for their looks from an early age, appearance becomes vital to their sense of self-worth- and maintaining it becomes an ever-present source of anxiety.
