Dave Matthews Band 6.02.05 - Tinley Park, IL - Concert Review
--------- --------- --------- ---------

Setlist:

One Sweet World --- missed this song, I was at ATM getting $$ for blanket
Grey Street --- same as above, could hear most of it and it ruled, a favorite fosho
Louisiana Bayou --- boring new song
Too Much --- ruled! they added a new slow part at first sax solo
Dream Girl --- somewhat entertaining new song
Hello Again --- stale old song finally recorded for new release
Time Of The Season --- oldie cover that Rachel appreciated
Die Trying --- boring new song
Lover Lay Down --- excellent song from the Crash CD
American Baby --- only good song from the new CD
Smooth Rider --- boring new song
Warehouse --- highlight of the night, and watching the hippies rock out was fun)
Hunger For The Great Light --- boring new song??
Crash --- another highlight of the night
Stand Up --- depressing new song. we sat down.
All Along The Watchtower --- bob dylan cover, performed with much energy, as usual

Old Dirt Hill --- another new song lacking the complexity and excitement/emotion of earlier stuff
Tripping Billies --- another highlight, a good ending song. CARTER BEAUFORD ON THE DRUMS!

I would rather have seen Jimi Thing, Crush, Halloween, Lie in Our Graves, and Ants Marching... but I can't have everything I want, I guess...

I had a good time at this concert. I was about a mile away from the band, in the lawn, on a steep hill, in the cold and rain (the weather report that morning, of course, said mostly sunny, high of 80, and no precipitation). I guess due to the rain, the Tweeter Center people didn't run the 2 big megatrons on the back of the building so the people on the lawn couldn't really see more than ants on stage and a dinky light show. The distance, plus being outside muted a lot of the sound. We could hear everything just fine, but no where near normal concert volume.

After seeing a couple DMB shows, I have come to a few conclusions. DMB can really rock the stage. Not as much can be said for the average fan at one of these concerts. I think I can break it down. 75% of DMB fans are drunks (25% of which are underage drunks), 33% are potheads, 25% are hippies, 10% dropped acid during the show, and the rest, who knows? One thing for sure: Steep hills and drunk people do not go well together. Another thing for sure: Drunk people are lazy, and will not walk to a bathroom when at the top of a steep hill... so many people (guys and girls) were busted for trying to piss out in the open.

So not only did Rachel and I pay for a good DMB concert, we also got a bonus freak show. Maybe there was something in the rain? There was definately something in the air. You could smell it all night. Another observation: the "hippy" looking, generally more "homeless" looking people smoke some nasty smelling skunk weed, while the better dressed, "suburban" looking, clean people had the nicer smelling stuff.

The concert started about an hour-and-a-half late because of the traffic jam outside the concert. The whole trip down there was highlighed (not the right word) by traffic jams and whatnot, but this was terrible. Plus it took over an hour to get out of the parking lot, which brought back Air Fair memories.

This wait wasn't so bad because we got to listen to these 3 drunk girls try to get a ride back to their hotel. We overheard this much: They were drunk; they rode a Taxi to the show; they didn't remember the name of their hotel, or how, exactly, to get there; the Taxi wouldn't come back to get them; one girl _absolutely_ had to pee, and finally did so in the ditch by my car; one girl lost one of her shoes in the ditch... they started screaming at each other and we were all having a good time at their expense. I think the cops directing traffic said that they would give them a ride later on.

Overall, good concert. They didn't play the songs I really wanted to hear, except only a few of them. They played too many of the suckass songs of their new release (which I expected), but I could still hope. The band put on a good show and the fans put on a good show, so me and Rachel just sat back and watched.

We also went to the Brookfield Zoo that day, I got a ton of awesome animal pictures. I might post some if I ever get time to. I have to be at work in less than six hours, for a 9.5 hour shift. It is going to suck (Super Saturday).
