Saw Inception over the weekend. It was quite entertaining, definitely more so than Avatar, but really, the movie is about as complex as nesting dolls. And while Zhuangzi was ahead of his times when he asked whether it was the man dreaming of the butterfly or the butterfly dreaming of the man, I expect a slightly more sophisticated conception of ( Read more... )

inception, slash

I haven't seen the movie (and won't: loud and violent is what I hear tell) but the minute it appeared everyone and his brother was writing Inception slash.

But do you want to wade through the dreck of ffnet to get your fix?

Precisely. I gave up. I decided Eames X Arthur is much more charming if I just let them remain in my imagination. Also this movie is kind of like Temeraire. It doesn't have heft. And I imagine it would simply collapse under that mountain of slash. I might wait to see if the Chinese fandom produce something though.

It doesn't have heft.

Interesting. Half the commenters were saying 'Oh, must see it again, so complex and twisty' and the other half were saying 'Dear god could it be more simple-minded?'

It doesn't have heft at all. XD The setup is indeed complicated and twisty but they repeat everything over and over and over such that the dullest viewer must have understood by the end, I thought - other than the massive plot holes of fridge logic. Having seen all Satoshi Kon movies and the two Ghost in the Shell ones, there was nothing there I hadn't mentally navigated before - and the action sequences are terribly muddled.

The characters are as thin as paper, in exactly the way you can imagine setting off a spate of pleasantly forgettable shoehorn-A-and-B-into-standard-seme/uke-roles yaoi in a Japanese fandom circa 2002; what's really weird to me is that it seems to have had exactly this effect on Wfandom! paleaswater, you'd rather poke at inception_kink than ffn...

Quite so. Though I think because the actors are generally competent actors the characters seems less flat than they actually are.

The only thing that puzzles me is why dream loss of gravity in level 1 would have effect on level 2 but not on level 3. Seems rather arbitrary.

Yes, no heft, and I think partly it's because of the genre. I mean it's really a heist movie, and those are generally pretty flat. But like you I found it enjoyable enough. For a while I was really distracted/obsessed by Eames' lips...

Me too. They just seemed a bit obscene on that face.
