Travelers in Mongolia frequently happen upon prayer mounds (ovoo), little heaps of stone and flags and other objects, left by travelers to placate the spirits. The travelers are supposed to walk around it, and add stones or coins or other objects to the heap to ensure safe passage. These kind of mounds are supposed to be the oldest form of worship, and found in almost every ancient culture. When I first read about them I got the fantods.
Recently Piglet developed a new habit. Normally piglet is quite fastidious, and insisst on things in their place, but every few days, he would get out all his small toys, packed so neatly in boxes -- the legos, crayons, puzzles, misc. stuff that a toddler collects, and dump them all in a pile in middle of the living room. When every box is empty, he would dance around looking very proud, and guard the pile to make sure that no one tries to put anything away. So now prayer mounds no longer give me fantods. They may be ancient, but they arose out of the imagination of two year olds.
