So what am I doing right now?
I spent the last two weeks at Seth's. He got me into watching Dollhouse and Jeremiah (which are quite good; actually Dollhouse is AMAZING), more Dr. Who, and a buncha other stuff on his Netflix (he has the sweet setup of Wii and NEtflix thru his rather sizeable TV). It was good comfort food.
I decided to really think about where I want to be, now that my first choice, wherever Jenny is, is obliterated. So I stepped up my grad school desires. I like academia. Three years ago I didn't think I would, but oh how wrong was I! It's been a step-up process ever since. Returning to community college, swimming in the shallow end figuring out if I even remembered how to swim. Pacific University, going for that olympic size pool and a few laps.
Now I want to swim with the sharks. I'm that good, or can be good. It's not cockiness; I have to fight every day to accept what my potnetial, an more importantly what I can do right now.
But I can do it.
I have very little time to push ahead with Fulbright and Marshall Scholarships to attend the Creative Writing MA program at Edinburgh Napier University in Scotland, but I left groundwork and got it all back on track. In addition, I want to get an English Doctorate as well. Whether Scotland works out or not, when the applications open up in October the Cornell, Harvard, or Columbia programs interest me. Whether I jump into them immediately or segueway from the Edinburgh MA remains to be seen.
But I'm that good. I can be That Guy. Tomorrow I take my first stab at the GRE test; I don't need it for Scotland, but I will for the other schools.
So that's one thing. I've sent out various applications, but the truth is I don't want a job. Or not like the ones I always had before. The retail jobs. The counter attendent jobs. I just can't hack that and respect myself anymore.
I took a count. Here's every job I've held in my working life since tenth grade:
Painter & Maintanence -- Lago Vista ISD
Butcher Block -- Albertsons Grocery Store
Screen Printer Apprentice -- Big T's
Customer Service Representive -- Hollywood Video (the tux shirt and everything)
Graveyard Shift Cashier -- Quix Convenience Store and Gas Station
Overnight Grocery Stocker -- Wal-Mart
Golf Cart Retrieval Engineer -- Highland Lakes Golf Club
Counter Attendent -- Comet Cleaners
Owner -- The Adventurer's Guild (Comic Books & Games -- Actually, I'd love to do that again!)
Warehouse Worker -- Alliance Games Distribution
Counter Attendent -- Daylight Donuts
Counter Attendent -- Rick's Cleaners
Customer Service Representitive -- Toys'R'Us
Living Sign -- Motivational Group Inc.
Peer Tutor, Japanese -- Austin Community College Learning Lab
Circulation Desk Student Supervisor -- Pacific University Library
So, 16 jobs. the college jobs I liked and would do again, although my Japanese is quite rusty. I do have a few applications in at ACC. And some out in other places that likely won't work. And a couple of positions at UT I need to finish the applications for; I hate being at a level now where jobs I qualify for require cover letters. Even though I like writing, I really hate those things. I hate writing / talking about myself. Hate it. Sadly, the most promising job right now?
Evening custodian at Southwestern University. The HR was quite delighted to see someone was interested, but she did say she would keep an eye out for better jobs that fit my qualifications.
We shall see.
