Adventures in plumbing

So finally, after 4 months of aggravation and confusion, I figured out what was wrong with the water lines in my kitchen sink. Water had been periodically backing up into the dishwasher, and I could not for the life of me figure out why. Nor could the (by my count 6) plumbers or contractors who had looked at it figure out why either.

Everyone said it was the main pipe which was clogged. And since the problem first started when I was running the washer I'd had installed on the main line, that was also thought to be a culprit.

Because it appeared that the water was draining back through the waste line. But it wasn't. Well, I think some of it was; once a siphon effect started, I think that water pulled out of the waste line, but it started with the intake line.

Once I figured out the water was coming from the intake line, it was pretty easy to find the cause on the internet: bad water input valve.

So I went to an appliance parts store (even better than Home Depot), and bought the part. Then I replaced the part. New intake valve. No water siphoning back into the dishwasher (at least so far). Dishwasher works.

Cost of repair:

Intake valve: $40.00
Part to connect valve to hose: $3.00
Plumber's putty: 1.00

Total cost of repair: 44.00

Not having to spend another fucking fortune on a plumber?: priceless

Also, rent Weeds. For a show about a pot-growing suburban mom, it is really funny and strangely addictive.
