http://www.infinity-universe.com So, this link is to the website of a new game in development which sounds a surprising amount like EVE Online - Wide range of ship classes, varied playstyles from solo play to corporate empires of players in a persistent sandbox environment. Only better. Procedurally-generated worlds and star systems? This all sounds too good to be true. Proper exploration may, in fact, be plausible in this game.
I know one of my closest comrades in Clan Hyena, Avetorian, would be drawn to it. He's the one who found it and first told me about it. It sounds brilliant, but can they really do what they say? And can they do it quickly enough to smother the floundering EVE Online?
EVE Online is in trouble right now, ever since the 'explosion' of player reactions post-Incarna. Overall, the once very supportive player-base, which has generally ignored the flaws in the game's design, are finally speaking out against the very broken game that CCP has allowed to fester. And, to be honest, the players are just as much to blame for this as CCP, since, as we've often observed, CCP is fairly incompetent in general. It's the players who have finally kicked them in the ass for neglecting their prized pig, and finally gotten them seriously considering actual BALANCE fixes (such fixes as outlined in the theory blogs
here and
here). Fixes that should have been done earlier, yes, but only because players took the failings this seriously. If this stance on quality was insisted upon as strongly by the players earlier, it would have been done earlier. The players should accept their own share of the blame on this, especially since we know so well how disorganized CCP is. Yes, CCP is incompetent, but it is quite clear, now, that we are just as much to blame for the state of the game, since, as I have repeated, they only took the problems seriously after players finally got upset about the failings enmasse.
Besides, you can't expect a company to fix something if you let them think most players actually don't mind the status quo.
The CSM was formed to help with this stuff, but it has consistently been misunderstood and poorly utilized. It's finally been put to better use, but who knows- it may be too late with that Infinity game on the horizon.
Still watching, still playing.
