OMG Squee.
1. it's a musical; songs that describe character emotion; using the musical moment dramatically to create and build tension.
2. it's a soap opera with character insight; not a flailing of emotion but characters making choices, taking stands and letting the emotional undertow carry along very hard choices.
3. It had that winking wit still; the dry humor and ridiculous sense of discomfort.
Oh yeah. Discomfort. It's difficult to talk about such things and not come off preachy, treacly, patronizing, condescending or worse. Should we notice the disabilities or ignore them? Should we plan around them, or not. Should we treat these special people...special or as special as anyone else, by which i mean not special at all.
And then of course to equate Kurt's gayness and his struggle to either show or it or fade back, with Artie's "out because he has to be" disability- well that's problematic.
Which is all wonderful; because it creates a discussion, not provides a pat answer. And it does it with beautiful melodrama that (if twitter is right) makes many many people cry.
