Megamind today- the latest from Dreamworks. Not bad, really. Will Ferrell has a good chemistry with his David Cross-voiced henchman. Brad Pitt as Captain Hammer Metro Man; lovely square-jawed character design. Really, all the gold stars go to presentation, but it's a bit like a Big Mac lovingly arranged on a silver platter. The potential for exploiting the tropes long established in a superhero genre is fairly vast, and while this outing does evoke a chuckle, it stays well inside familiar territory. It does leave room on the plate for character exploration, though mostly just of the protagonist. Its biggest crime is the memories it evoked of better movies, which I fear poisoned, for me, what is otherwise a perfectly acceptable family film.
The simpler lines of a cartoon hold up the 3-D better than its live-action counterparts, for what it's worth. I also couldn't help but squirm at the A-list of stars they put together to do the voices, and then, after a soundtrack rich with AC/DC choice cuts, they close on a Micheal Jackson tune. So much money burning before my eyes, on things which don't make that much of a difference to me. I have to wonder how many more adults were inclined to take the family out to see this movie just because Tina Fey and Jonah Hill or Brad Pitt were headlining it.
Then again, one of the trailers was for Yogi Bear, which looks unwatchable and will probably bomb. Would its revenue budge any worthy degree if, I dunno, Sir Anthony Hopkins were the voice of Boo Boo?
