while i'm upset/frustrated/saddened by the bombing in london and the over 50 lives lost, it is interesting to note that since june 28, 2004, over 2,000 people have been killed in Iraq by car bombs alone (480 of them). of course, it's very different - there is no war going on in london, and, of course, london is much closer to the united states politically and culturally so it's easier to relate.
but the difference in media coverage is still interesting.

on a similar note, i wonder how many children died of malaria yesterday morning? the un millenium task force estimates 1 child every 30 seconds, which works out to 2880 children per day. it would seem that malaria is a lot more preventable than terrorism.

and just to throw out one more statistic, 24,000ish people died of starvation yesterday.

with numbers like that, it's really hard not to feel more than a little cynical.
