Kids are so funny!! I took Nigel's kids camp group on a tour of the SFU theatre yesterday. I planned out where to go and what to do with them etc... Niggel rented a bus and drove them out from West Van. Hah. I took them to the costume shop, let them all pick a hat to wear for the rest of the tour. 6-12 year olds walking around in giant sombreros and sailor hats and ridiculous things. Then we went to Black Box, I hung and light for them, did some ladder acrobatics, then we played charades. Took them too the scene shop, did a table-saw demonstration (they love that shit). Then showed them the plaster bloody severed hand that we made for The Possibilities last semester ("this is what happens when you're not careful!!"). Then on to the green room, which has the cubby-hole to the stage's trap door in it... "rumor has it... this is where the ghost lives, in this little cubby under the stage..." Wide eyes all around. So cute. Then I took them to the props room and played eye-spy. Which is hard when half of them don't really know english. :D
For the grand finale, Nigel and I planned a 'ghost sighting'. We got Fiona to dress up all in white, and wait for Nigel to get the kids reading some Hamlet, then start ruckusing around in the attic/catwalk of the theatre. Nigel says "Shh! Shh! Do you guys hear that!?" Then I cut the power to the stage. Black out. The kids almost shit themselves, I just loved it.
I told my sister about all this, and she's a summer camp leader as well, but at SFU.. she wants me to take her group on a tour as well. I could make a living on this, haha.
