It had been no ordinary storm that night. Since the first sign of lightening it had been evident that it had been purposefully summoned from the sky. A natural charge would never emit such power. Power he had not been the only one to notice. Since the storm had begun it had become a topic among other visitors over the electric journals. And though Genie was unsure why such vast power was behind the storm, as the night went on, he quickly found himself more suspicious of its presence. Could it have been a call of distress they had all over looked? He had to find out.

Outside the city gates, Genie’s eyes cast themselves to the dark sky, the feel of static still lingering in the air. There was little to be seen in the field, no more than a sea of silver grass, but that which was felt was far more unsettling than of any he had felt before. The heat of battle… He could sense the struggle that had occurred here and the ever evident Darkness which remained. His companion’s antagonistic hiss was all he needed to confirm it. Turning his gaze down to the Lumen, he unclipped the leash from the Tamafelis’ collar and allowed him to run free. Lumens, from what he had gathered, were attracted to the scent of Darkness. And, judging by all that which still lingered in the field, the one responsible for this struggle must have radiated the stuff like a furnace did heat. If they were still present, he was sure Poncho would easily find them if he could not. As the Lumen quickly ran off, Genie followed in haste.

The ground around them appeared scorched, surely where the lightening which had been heard from inside the domes had met. He leaned down and touched it thoughtfully, rubbing the ash between his fingers. His face hardened. He had only just missed them; it was still warm. But that was not what bothered him. No, it was the feel of the magic that remained present. It was all too familiar to him. He knew this magic.

Urd.

“The Organization.” He said to himself. They had shown interest in her before, having left the roof of Iriela Apartments a wreck after a struggle to read her memories. But he had not suspected them to return. He had thought them wiser than that. The strength of a goddess was by no means something to be overlooked, especially when Urd was far from a pushover. What made them think they had stood a chance against such power? Had they figured out something he had not? Had they somehow defeated…

The resentful hiss of the Lumen broke him from his train of thought, turning his attention to an empty patch of dirt in the field. He approached curiously, searching the area for any signs of the perpetrator. Had it not been for the Lumen’s persistence, he would have completely overlooked the unnatural aura that clung to the air. Upon closer inspection, he noted the slight distortion in the air. Such a disturbance in the fabric of space could only be cause by some sort of tear. Had this been a portal? He frowned and ran his hand over the space. Too much time had passed to determine where the tear had lead, only that the space before him had been torn in order to provide one. This must have been where the culprit had made their getaway. But how had Urd made hers?

Genie winced, the thought that the goddess had failed to make such an escape impossible to ignore. The last thing he wanted was to jump to conclusions but all signs pointed to what he had feared most. And though he could certainly try, he could only lie to himself for so long, and even then knew such behaviour would do him no good. He had lived this many times before but still could not help but feel scared. Scared he had lost her. Forever. And there was nothing he could do. There never was. Regardless how powerful he was, he could not fight the lamp. There was no changing time in which he had spent prisoner inside and even if he could, he could not bring those he had lost during that time back.

But Urd, she had brought him hope. With her things were different… She was different. For the first in a long time he had seen a future with someone else in it. He was no longer alone. And why should he have been? He was free, was he not, a slave to the lamp no more? It could no longer separate him those he cared for. He could come and go as he pleased and obeyed only his will and his will alone. He had a choice. He paused, raising his head from his hands.

He had a choice. He was free.

Removing his journal from his haramaki, he felt himself overcome with determination. No, this was not over yet. Not by a long shot. He had been forced to give up for so long he had almost convinced himself he had to. But the lamp no longer held power over him and the decision was his to make.

This time he would fight.
