It was a quiet night in the neighborhood, which was odd in and of itself. The gypsies that lived in the buildings around Iriela Apartments usually made no small amount of noise at night, but tonight, perhaps in reaction to some unseen threat, the only noise was the soft rustling of a gentle breeze through faux trees. The painted sky sparkled with jeweled stars, the artificial moonlight casting everything in a soft, white-blue light.

With balance and grace beyond that of any human, Urd stood on the tips of the decorative fencing lining the flat roof of the old, Victorian-style apartment building. The cool breeze stirred her long hair and the layered skirt of her dress and her face was a picture of serene peace. She stood still for a moment longer, hooded eyes watching the streets below, and lifted her arms to cross her hands over her heart. A bright white glow appeared behind her and with a gentle flurry of black and white feathers, the top half of a woman with dual-colored wings rose out of Urd's back.

The goddess and angel looked at each other, conveying some unspoken agreement. Then, moving as one, they lifted their arms as if embracing the night. And Urd began to sing.

It was a wordless song to the average ear. Her singing voice was a measured alto, rising in volume beyond that of mortal capabilities. There was power in her voice, magic that couldn't be expressed in any other language than melody and pitch. The pulse of magical energy surrounded the goddess and spread out over the surrounding buildings.

Behind her, the roof slowly began to change color. Real, thriving grass grew from the brick and mortar as if were the most fertile soil. Trees sprouted like weeds, flowers exploded into bloom. As Urd continued her song, the spell poured out beyond the roof of Iriela -- surrounding buildings suddenly sprouted vines, delicate white flowers blossomed between bricks and cobblestone. Even the occasional tree would grow rapidly on the streets.

The song ended and Urd's hair and dress settled as the breeze vanished. She turned and nearly lost her balance -- there wasn't just a garden behind her on the roof. A mini rainforest would have been a more apt description.

She glanced up at the angel who smiled sheepishly in response. "Huh...I may have overdone it."
