Knuckles wasn't happy. As the Guardian of Angel Island, it was his duty to protect the Master Emerald (something which caused him to grit his teeth in anger; he didn't like being forced to stay away from his purpose in life) - and, lacking that, he'd protect something else. So far, he hadn't found much about the city that needed protecting, but he'd done it anyway, smashing Heartless wherever he found them, though he didn't know what they were.

And now he was here, with the bat-girl, dressed in a black bow tie and dress shoes that hurt his feet. He'd needed some time to get used to them so he wouldn't fall in case of a fight, but they would do. He'd grumbled about it the entire time, of course, but Rouge had managed to convince him that going undercover was needed. Stupid bat. He could smash the building in just as easily, if not more so.

The echidna sighed, not bothering to mask his irritation with the situation. Hopefully, Sonic wouldn't be here and he'd have less to deal with.

No matter what happened at this social function, it was all worth it to see her rival looking so out of place in that get up. He couldn't have gone in his usual attire, especially when it wouldn't have gone with the black, elegant strapless dress she had found in one of the stores. This world wasn't their own, but she intended to keep up appearances when possible.

Rouge stood at his side and surveyed the area. The host of the party was a bit of a mystery to her and it seemed as if he hadn't even arrived yet. Whatever was planned, she couldn't help but be curious. Maybe she would find a way to work it to her advantage. Until it happened, though...

A small smirk appeared on her lips as her eyes returned to watch the echidna and without moving her gaze, she grabbed a drink off of a passing waiter's tray and took a sip. "At least the music here is decent~"

If there was one thing Knuckles couldn't stand, besides loud-mouthed hedgehogs and annoying bat-girls - not to mention Emerald thieves and lying mad scientists - it was social functions. Those were bad enough, but now he'd had to dress up, which was, to put it plainly, ridiculous.

He humphed at the bat, his face set in its perpetual frown. "It's not my type," he grumbled. Then again, nothing would please him, considering his mood. He much preferred silence to the idle chatter of the people nearby, anyway - but had he been in a less foul mood, he would have (maybe) admitted that the music wasn't bad.

A grump like always. Even with a few accessories slapped on him, he was still the same old uptight Guardian.

Rouge turned to face him fully and moved a little closer, though making sure to keep some distance. Scaring or traumatizing him was not her intention, at least, not this early into the party. "You should relax~ People will get suspicious if you keep acting like that."

Knuckles sighed. "I'm always like this, bat," he growled, casting a sideways glance in her direction. "Anyone who knows me is aware of that." It was true; Sonic was constantly elbowing his buddy to lighten up and have some fun. Knuckles' idea of fun was relaxing by the Master Emerald - or else smashing his way through some of Robotnik's scrap-metal idiots.

"And I am suspicious," he continued in a lower voice. "From what I know, the guy throwing the party is bad news. We can't let ourselves slack off." One wrong move, and they could be dead meat - at least as far as the Guardian was concerned.

"Just because you are suspicious doesn't mean you should look it." Not that it really mattered, she thought as she cast an eye around. Anyone that was mildly intelligent and paid attention prior to the party would be suspicious, too.

"Anyway, since we're stuck here for a while, we might as well enjoy ourselves." She downed the rest of her drink and set the glass on a passing tray. "I'm guessing you're not the dancing type, are you~?"

Just because you are suspicious doesn't mean you should look it. That particular statement from Rouge earned an eyeroll, and Knuckles looked at his companion flatly. "Like anyone here with half a brain doesn't know to be suspicious," he replied, keeping his voice low nonetheless.

... Wait. What? Dancing? Him? Knuckles snorted, almost amused at the thought. "Yeah, right, bat. If you want someone with twinkle-toes, go find the hedgehog." Sonic was bound to be around here somewhere.

That's right, Sonic was supposed to be around. This would be the perfect opportunity for her to be introduced and she could finally find out if he recognized her or not. Either way, he'd prove useful to have around if something happened.

"Are you saying he's a better dancer than you are~? My, I didn't expect you to be so humble, Knuckie. But if you want to show me to your friend, be my guest."

Knuckles rolled his eyes. "I don't care about that stuff," he replied with a frown. "If you want to dance with Little Boy Blue, I don't care." What was this, a date? Okay, definitely not going there. Knuckles' cheeks burned at the mere thought of it - and he, of course, made up for it by being even grumpier than usual.

"I don't know where Sonic is, and I don't care."

Was that some extra red she saw? Any thoughts of stopping her teasings and flirtations for the night went away and she happily continued. "Well, if he isn't around... Is there any way I can convince the handsome man before me to spare me a dance~?"

Even while she was pestering her rival, she remained alert to any suspicious movements going on around them. Work came before pleasure and if something came up, she was ready to drop the act and get serious.

Knuckles' cheeks burned hotter at the question, and Knuckles had to stop himself from flailing (mentally or otherwise) somehow, so the echidna frowned at Rouge and pretended the blush didn't exist. "No way, bat," he growled. "Find somebody else to dance with you."

He huffed impatiently and looked around. Where was the guy throwing this gig and why wasn't he here yet? Knuckles had come here for information, not to be embarrassed by his brat of a partner.

"You were so sweet when we first met. Where did this hostility come from~?" The answer to that was obvious, and one she prided herself in. This was tame to how she would have treated him if he had been her actual rival, so in comparison, he was quite lucky.

Rouge maintained the distance they had between them and weighed her options. There were other, little things she could do to make him even more flush...

The Guardian of Angel Island rolled his eyes. "I'm not sweet, bat-girl," he muttered, still trying and failing to suppress the blush on his cheeks. "And anyway, this dance stuff annoys me." Knuckles would much rather have a good fight than a date - and that was in no small part because he actually knew what to do in battle.

"Not sweet? This..." she trailed off and made a split second decision. Without warning, she quickly moved in to kiss him briefly on the cheek to indicate the unusual redness there. "Says otherwise~" This was one reaction she wasn't sure of, but it couldn't be too terrible. After all, she made sure it didn't last longer than a second and gave him space afterward in case any limbs started moving. Mentally, she crossed her fingers. She knew she was playing a dangerous game and as much fun as this was, losing any semblance of trust he had in her would be nothing but bad.

Knuckles froze when he was kissed on the cheek and stared at Rouge, his cheeks as red as the rest of him. He couldn't find his words for the next few... well, minutes, actually. No one had ever done that before in his life, and the echidna's brain was... well, to be frank, it was short-circuiting, as though to say "DOES NOT COMPUTE."

Well, that was one way to get him to stop arguing with her. As he stood there speechless, she reached over to trail a finger slowly down a dread. "Don't have anything to say to that~?"
