Jack's expression hardened a little with indignation at the obvious mockery; perhaps if it had been more prevalent at home, he could take it more in stride. But in Halloweentown he was respected and admired, to a degree such that he had to adopt an attitude towards himself and all his position touched upon that was considerably more cavalier than he honestly felt. Still, he had been chosen for a reason, he had done adequately at his post in the very least, and he deserved to be treated with more respect than a laboratory specimen!

The skeleton scowled in response, unable even to lift his head to speak more comfortably. His might have been a small kingdom, but a good one, with dedicated, wonderful citizens and an important job.... a very important one, even if he didn't altogether live up to it. "They couldn't; I haven't chosen an heir yet, and they would need to be trained...." It did make him worry, though..... How were they faring in his absence? He had left just as Halloween celebrations in the real world were about to commence, and that meant either none of them had made it up, or the tombstones had been left open....

That was a rather unsettling thought. Anyone could move in and out between them at their own convenience, including Lock, Shock, and Barrel. What mischief they were up to with free access to the outside world, he had no idea, but he disliked the possibility immensely; their pranks generally led to trouble. The Mayor certainly wasn't much help in keeping things running smoothly without him; he only was an elected official, after all. But then.... it wasn't like the previous king had died. He was still out and about, mad as a hatter and probably enjoying himself immensely. If they really did need to, they could call him back as an interim ruler..... if they were really worried that Jack was gone for good, they could even have him select and train a replacement. What would he do if he came home and found that he had been replaced?
