A little after noon, at the Ferris wheel sparkplasma September 25 2007, 02:23:33 UTC
The big wheel was an easy landmark to find, being the tallest thing on the grounds and moving. Ivan had had to watch it in fascination for a good ten minutes when he first reached it. How did they keep it from rolling away?

Eventually, though, he'd checked his journal, and gotten in touch with Karst, and now she was supposed to be meeting him here. It suddenly occurred to him that, although they'd been corresponding for days, he hadn't actually seen her since she'd died. Or... since they'd beaten her and Agatio, anyway.

She hadn't seemed angry when he'd read her mind a minute ago, though. More... frightened. He was fairly used to angry from her, but frightened was something new. Then again, he couldn't really blame her; this city would scare just about anybody - which included himself.

Fear, panic, and the hustle and bustle of the festival had ruined most of Karst's attempts to gussy up for the day. Her shoes had gotten messy from walking (and running, a bit) through litter and debris. A child had climbed up a very unsafe structure and thrown confetti into her hair (and gotten some in her ears, which was most uncomfortable). Nervously worrying at stray threads in her long double-cape had all but ruined it.

Nonetheless, it was clear at a glance that she'd calmed herself down from her scare at Felix's departure-- Karst prided herself on the ability to keep at least a semblance of self-control in stressful situations, and while her mind was still flooded with fear, she was able to think over it.

It was true that Ivan blended right in with the crowds of Paixao with his light blond hair and penchant for brightly-colored clothes. But Karst was easy to spot with her dark clothes and dark red hair, so Ivan would have no trouble finding her.

He noticed Karst through a break in the crowd, and his heart jumped involuntarily before he managed to shut it up with logic. She'd said she wouldn't hurt him if he didn't make her mad - or at least, he thought that was what she'd said. He couldn't remember now. But either way, they had to talk, so he just took a deep breath and walked quickly toward her.

"Karst?" he called once he was within earshot.

Karst did jump, and she nearly dropped her journal (she'd met someone with a taste for explosives) before flipping it shut. For a second, her face reflected her surprise, and then she regained control and did her best not to look so worried-- and not to think so worried, either. She could at least conceal specific thoughts from the mind-reader, which was more than non-Adepts could do, but emotions were much harder to handle, especially since those of the Fire Clan were, as Alex had mentioned once, emotional.

"Ivan. I heard that Laharl returned okay, is that true?"

Ivan nodded; thanks to Flonne, Laharl's escape was kind of an open secret anyway. He looked both ways quickly to make sure no one was listening, then added, "We're just trying to regroup right now. I think once he's got his strength back, though, we're going to start looking for the others who got taken."

At least, that was what he hoped the plan was. They hadn't really talked yet about what they were going to do next. But they still had Bloo and Syaoran, and if what Karst had said was true, probably Felix and Piers, too...

Oh yeah. "Speaking of which, what happened to Felix and Piers? Did they really just vanish?" It wasn't a question of disbelief or accusation, just verification. He wanted to make sure he had the facts straight, instead of assuming...

Karst fidgeted. How could Ivan stay so analytical when people were disappearing? It was good that Laharl had escaped, though-- not because he was any friend of hers, but because he was, like Sephiroth and the furry creature called Timon, a leader and one widely considered knowledgeable about Paixao.

And like a good leader, he'd already made the next plans, while Karst had been too distressed and caught up in the moment to even think of thinking ahead. Foolish girl, she scolded herself. She'd have to make a real plan after this festival, one that didn't simply consist of gathering information ( ... )

Ivan lowered his eyes a little, fishing for a good answer in his head. "We can't rule it out. I mean, how else could they have disappeared so quickly?" he said after a second.

His mind drifted back to what Laharl had told him earlier. Drowning in darkness. The organization had put him through a lot, and Ivan hated the idea that they could be subjecting his other friends to the same kind of torture even as they spoke. Even worse was that, right now, there wasn't much he could do about it.

The faintest hint of a plan suddenly occurred to her, and she wondered-- not aloud-- whether having escaped, Laharl could find his way back to the place where the captured had been held prisoner... or tell someone else where to do so. It would be daring and dangerous and risky, but if they could slow down the Organization by destroying their base... But that could invite what some people might speak of as "terrible retribution", and Karst knew caution well enough not to speak about her plan. Instead, she shook her head.

"But why would the Organization want Felix? He doesn't know anything about Paixao yet, and he didn't... he..." This part was going to be difficult to explain, since she didn't quite have the words for it. "I spoke to someone in the journals who claimed to be one world's spirit of Death, and he said that some people were being brought to Paixao not only from different worlds, but from different times, too. That... that we were talking to Felix from right after the events at Venus Lighthouse... that he was much younger ( ... )

Death? That threw Ivan a bit off balance for a second, but of course, after demons and talking animals, the spirit of Death was the logical next step, wasn't it?

But... a Felix from an entirely different time? That took him a few seconds to wrap his head around. He'd known that Felix didn't remember anything past what had happened at the Venus Lighthouse, but he'd never considered that it might be because, from his friend's perspective, none of it had happened yet. "I just thought he'd been hit with amnesia," he mused, putting a hand to his chin. The more he thought on it, though, the more plausible it sounded. He was beginning to get used to all the weirdness here.

Karst had a point, though. What could the Organization want with Felix? Or with Piers, for that matter? Sure, Piers was Lemurian and probably older than all the rest of them combined, but... he didn't let that get around. As for Felix, he had no idea, either.

"What could they want with anybody they've taken, though?" he asked, after a moment. "Syaoran seemed pretty ( ... )
