11:02 EXACTLY, Ring Toss and Wandering humaniste September 1 2007, 18:42:46 UTC
After wandering the festival a few minutes, Death had gravitated towards the center of most of the noise and found a multitude of tents, each with several small booths. It seemed these were the games his companion had been talking about at the entrance. Death gestured towards one of the games - a square of small milk bottles, and a small stack of red rings handed to him by the game's proprietor.

I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE, Death admitted, handing a few of the rings to Kit. HOW DO YOU PLAY?

Kit chuckled. It was funny, almost, with Death not really knowing such things. He guessed it was part of being pulled into a strange place, though. "All right, here's how it works. You throw the rings, and they're supposed to land around the neck of the milk bottle. Kind of like... this." He tossed one, and it landed in between two of the bottles. "Except hopefully around the neck. I've never been good at this. But if you do it right, you win a prize."

OH, Death replied, watching the red ring fly and miss its target. I SEE. He studied the arrangement of bottles intently for a few seconds, then tossed all four of his rings in rapid succession, landing each around the neck of a bottle with four satisfactory clinks.

Oblivious to the stunned look of the game owner, Death looked over to Kit once again. WAS THAT CORRECT?

Kit blinked, and nodded. "Yeah... that's right." He looked at the toys that were the prizes, and caught sight of the chart.

2 RINGS ON = 1 SMALL PRIZE
3 RINGS ON = 1 MEDIUM PRIZE
4 RINGS ON = 1 LARGE PRIZE

"I guess you get a large prize. What do you want?" Kit asked, wondering exactly what Death would look like with any of these things. They mostly seemed to be stuffed animals in neon colors.

THERE IS A PRIZE FOR THIS? Death was surprised - he'd not thought something so simple would merit any sort of reward. If they really wanted to, though...

I HAVE NO PREFERENCE, he told the game manager. GIVE ME WHATEVER YOU THINK IS FIT.

The stuffed bear he received came up to his waist, its fur a shade of pink so radioactive it nearly glowed. UM...THANK YOU, he finally managed, picking up the bear and turning to Chris. DID YOU WANT TO PLAY, CHRISTOPHER?

Kit smiled, so widely he thought his face was going to break. The sight of the bear with Death was just too amusing - he wished he had a camera. He realized Death had asked him a question.

"Oh! Uh. No, I'm all right. I'm better at the dart throwing game, anyway. I'm not the best at throwing things accurately." He admitted. "And... uh. I actually prefer to be called 'Kit', if you don't mind."

KIT. Death nodded, remembering that people sometimes chose to go by shortened versions of their own names. I WILL REMEMBER THAT.

NOW WHAT IS THIS DART GAME? he questioned curiously, ever willing to learn more.

"Well." Kit thought. "The basic idea of the game is to throw darts at a board that has inflated balloons on it. If you pop them, you win a prize. And since the balloons are pretty close together, it's not that hard to pop them. That's why I like that game."

Alice made her way over to the games section. Since she had already entered the festival, and was currently brooding, she saw no reason not to join Death and find out about this companion of his. It appeared they were playing some kind of carnival game, although Alice had to admit that this did not hold her interest in the slightest. After all, she had been playing these kinds of games when she was a child, and they had slowly lost their appeal now that Chizuru...

But enough about that. She wasn't hear to obsess about fleeting fantasies. She was here to find information.

She approached death, cocking her head a little. "A rather interesting way for Death to spend his leisure time isn't it?"

INTERESTING, Death commented. Humans could amuse themselves with just about anything, it seemed. AND IS THIS DART GAME HERE? I SHOULD LIKE TO SEE IT.

Hearing Alice's greeting, he turned to face her. IT IS INDEED, BUT I HAVE LITTLE TO DO FOR A WHILE YET. He nodded. YOU ARE LOOKING WELL, ALICE, DESPITE EVERYTHING.

"It should be." Kit turned as he heard someone else address Death. "Oh. Hello. I guess you two know each other. My name's Kit Rodriguez. Well, actually, Christopher, but I hate being called that. What's your name?" Best to be polite to someone he didn't know, especially in this place.

Alice looked from Death to the boy. She did wonder what Death meant by "despite everything," but she was sure she could answer that later.

"I try," Alice replied, give a short curtsy. "I see you've immersed yourself in the festivities of this place. It is quite charming, isn't it? The clamor, the food, the games and such. There's something to be said for frivolity."

Alice turned to Death's friend. "I am Alice, Alice Liddle. Pleased to meet you."

Alice turned to the dart game, and a flicker of a smile danced in her eyes. "I should think I'd like to try that game. It hasd been awhile since I've had a stationary target."

THERE IS, Death responded to Alice's statement, THOUGH I HAVEN'T THE FAINTEST HOW ONE WOULD WORD IT. His lack of understanding didn't deter him from participating at all, and his participation didn't make it any more understandable. A bit of a paradox, but it didn't really matter and it wouldn't stop him from participating in the hopes of learning something.

I SHOULD LIKE TO SEE YOU TWO PLAY.

Kit thought over her name for a moment, and nodded, storing it in his mind. He thought that he had heard a name like it before, but it was no matter. Kit looked over at the dart game as well. "Pleased to meet you, as well. Stationary target? Mm, hmm... it's a fun game, yeah. And this place... it reminds me of Coney Island back home. At least in the summertime, when there's lots of people around." He started to walk towards the game, but made sure he didn't lose the other two.

Alice smiled. There were so many different interesting people around here, it really did make life interesting. She supposed she was still reeling from Chizuru's sudden departure, and it had hurt a little, but she still had an island she was on and people to help. It really was no different from Wonderland.

Besides, Death certainly gave her a decent amount of ease, in a strange way. She had told the caterpillar once "I'm not afraid to die, at times I've welcomed death." She had meant every word, of course. It had been a long road to get to this place, and if she had to fight her way out of another strange world, so be it. She'd done it before.

She stepped up to the dart game. "I'd like three darts if you please?"

Death was a bit surprised at the name of the place Kit had mentioned - in Discworld, places tended to be named after what they resembled. A place called Coney Island certainly conjured interesting mental images, and he made a note to ask Kit about it later. For now, he was content to watch his new friends play this game.

...well, okay, maybe he wasn't. I WOULD LIKE THREE DARTS AS WELL, he said to the game's owner, remembering his manners and adding PLEASE.
