"Thanks," Toph said and gladly took his hand. Normally she would have felt rebuffed and insulted in his thinking she needed help, but in all honesty she did right about now. She was in a completely unfamiliar place, and she wouldn't even have bothered if she was alone. She was a little surprised by the laughter, but took it for a good thing and offered him a smile.
"Nix the hospital, and I don't really feel up to hotel searching at the moment. The soup kitchen is fine. One of the best things about a blind person is that you can take them anywhere and as long as it isn't smelly or too cramped, they're happy. Ya know, I haven't been to a restaurant in...well, never really. You could say I was on permanent house patrol in my old life. So...feel like taking a girl on her first date in a weird place?"
She was joking, but only half way. She was feeling really good now that there was no more demon running after them, and was starting to show her first signs of relief. In that fight, Toph had seriously wondered if they would have survived. Kir was pretty good company.
"I don't like closed in spaces so much myself," Kir answered. "Used to having a little more space around me. I just don't mind the trains 'cause there's lots of 'em back home."
But he stopped short when Toph said she'd never been to a restaurant in her life. "What, you live in a palace or somethin' and have everything brought in?" He cleared his throat a bit when she asked if he felt like taking her on a date. While she wasn't the type of girl he normally was interested in, she was...
Whoa, wait, what was he thinking?? He was stuck in another world, without Jing, and with his own body, and he was--
After several seconds he answered, "Uh, sure. Café it is."
"Well, that's good to hear," Toph replied. "And yeah, I actually DID live in a palace where things were brought to me. The Bei Fong family is pretty rich. For some reason, people seem to think happiness and money go hand in hand. It doesn't really work that way too much if you parents think of you as a weak invalid so...yup, haven't been to a restaurant before!"
Toph could tell Kir might have gotten a little nervous at the prospect of date and couldn't blame him. It wasn't like she knew how a date went, let alone what girls did on those. She couldn't resist teasing a little though.
She flashed him a smile and stretched out. "So...while we're waiting, tell me what your life was like. I mean, you know the gist of mine, it was pretty boring. What sort of things did you used to do to past the time?"
"So you're loaded, huh?" Kir said, which was strange because Toph certainly didn't act rich, at least nothing he'd seen so far. She went around barefoot, even though she'd already explained to him why she did so. (Hearing through one's feet was a little weird a concept, though he thought he really had no room to talk given his own little eccentricities.)
But his usual reaction kicked in when she mentioned that people had treated her as an invalid. "Why I aughta--! You sure ain't weak, you should have done whatever earthbender thing you wanted on them so they'd let you go and do normal things like goin' to a resturant!"
Then she went and threw him a curveball when she asked what his lfie was like.
"Uhh, careful. The ground's uneven here," he mumbled instead.
Toph shook her head and smiled sadly. "See, that would work if I still didn't care about them. I can't help it, you know. I've been dependent on them, and they've provided. They just didn't understand that I was meant for being more than some pruned up socialite who was blind and defenseless. hat's the point of wealth if you have to be a prison to it?"
Toph looked out a little, remembering that day, and hearing how very small Kir had sounded when she mentioned his history. She could understand that there were some memories he'd rather hold onto then talk about aloud.
In a way, that's what the Avatar crew were, weren't they? A beautiful memory of the way OUT, to touch and feel and come close to dying, but LIVING for the moment at least. She may not have been able to have friends at first, but now..?
"Sorry to touch a sore spot Kir. I guess even I have some things I'd rather talk about at another time."
"It's not that," Kir said lowly. "I guess... I wasn't sure how to bring it up. But if I told you what my life was like, you'd be all confused right now, because you think that I'm human... but I'm not."
Toph was definitely intrigued now. "Well in that case, if you're not human, what were you? Think about it Kir: I've been here and feel a lot of things that don't make sense. I can take in just about anything."
Rather than answer right away, Kir explained, "That's why I asked if you got turned blind when you came to Paixao. The trip here apparently has messed with a lot of people, especially those who ain't human. An' I know this 'cause I'm... an albatross."
"Wait, so there are people who're not human that were made human when they came here? Bizarre!" Toph cracked a smile. "You're an albatross huh? I thought there was something special about you. No offense or anything, but you seem kind of different from most humans I know, though I'm not quite sure how I'd describe how different you are. I guess I'd have to say that you just 'feel' different."
Well that was weird. She sure didn't know how she was going to explain to Kir what she meant. In any case, it was time for them to get off the train. Toph took his hand and the two of them shuffled out of the station which was much more bare now that most people had left the station in favor of Promenade Terrace. Toph could hear sighs and sounds and was able to tell that while the city was much more subdued than Vanaheim, it had its own shares of intrigue and conversation among its inhabitants. They walked for a small while until they came to Cafe Ersesat. The two entered at the same time, and Toph clumsily sat at a table, eager to get something to eat. It had been a long journey and she was kind of hungry.
When Terra got her invitation, she head out on foot with a map to get to Cafe Eresat. She had to admit that she got a little lost along the way, but she was too stubborn to ask for help. Besides, she can always look around while she was lost, right? There was no harm in that. Finally, Terra arrives at Cafe Eresat, looking around the area. Her stomach growled; what a perfect place to be at at a time like this!
She spots Toph with somebody else and grins. She heads over to them, saying, "Hey! Sorry it took me so long. I took a left when I was supposed to take a right, and I didn't realize it until, what, ten minutes later?" Okay, she kind of exaggerated, but it felt that way to her.
"Feel different?" Kir repeated, a little thoughtfully. But before he could say anything more on the subject, helooked up when someone walked over to them, just as he was about to start listing things off the menu. The easy way that she greeted Toph suggested that this was one of the girl's friends, and so Kir gave the blonde a grin and gestured to an empty seat at the table. The girls' upbeat candor was making it a little easier to feel better.
"We ain't been here very long," he said. "You're...?"
"...That's Terra," Toph replied, giving Kir a big smile. "She's one of the first friends I made here at Paixao. She's awesome!
She turned to Kir and shrugged. "I don't really know how to describe it. I usually get a feeling when I'm dealing with people: you know, sights, sounds, stuff like that. With you, everything just felt a little...I dunno, muffled. But ah well. No accounting for transformed creatures, right?"
She turned to Terra and greeted her warmly. "Welcome back! I was hoping you were OK! How are you feeling?"
"Well, I'm glad I didn't miss much yet. I'm Terra. And you?"
She turned to Toph, and smiled at her friend. "Been feeling good! Y'know, not doing much except taking a look around and checking out the place some more. I should've given you the heads up, though," she said. "I kind of disappeared on you for a moment there."
Kir had just opened his mouth to greet Terra, when an odd feeling passed over him. For a moment, he felt very dizzy, which was bad considering he was sitting down. He blinked rapidly, as though trying to clear the haziness from his vision. Then he glanced back up at the girls. "Umm... hello. Who are you two?"
And then, after a moment, he added, "Do you know where I am? Or..." His voice was terribly confused, "who I am?"
Toph laughed. "Hey, its no big! I just wanted to know you were alright. That fight was pretty tough, and to tell you the truth, we kinda lucked out. Still! I want to talk to you about some stuff that's been going on! There's this Organization, and this guy named Timon was telling me..."
Toph trailed off as she slowly turned to Kir, a confused look on her face. "What? What do you mean 'who am I?' You know darn well who I am, and who she is! You were just talking to us a minute ago, and you know who I am!"
Toph blinked, and closed her mouth. Had that just happened because she was talking about the Organization? Did they hold this kind of power?!
This was definitely scary. Firebenders suddenly didn't look that scary next to people that could make you forget who you were and send demons after you!
"Organization? Well, whoever they are--" Terra paused in her own words, and looked at Kir again. She looked just as confused, and maybe as surprised, as Toph did. She crossed her arms, saying, "Uh, yeah. You were just talking to her. And what gives? You were all right a second ago," she said. Terra didn't stop to consider that something was strange about this guy.
