[The voice Jake hears, he realizes sounds a bit younger than his own.]
I can come up with a list of reasons... One of the most important reasons why are my family back home. My mom, dad, and my older brother. No doubt they've got my whole neighborhood searching for me by now. [Tom's Yeerk most likely has the Sharing involved too, he keeps to himself.]
[Of course, there's this other big reason why, but he won't mention it. 'Cause it's for both the boy's, Jake's, and now Marco's protection.]
What sort of place did you come from? [Someplace so much worse off than this, maybe? Or did a parent or someone else decide to protect him by not mentioning some things? Not that it's any of his business, but this is the first person who tells him that he'd prefer to stay here. It's only of innocent curiosity.]
My world...is ordinary and not so confusing. It's easy to know where the food comes from, for one thing. It's not as complicated either.
It's called Earth. There aren't just cities, but a lot of countryside in other places. And there other places people go to have fun, such as amusement parks.
Where I live is nothing special in particular, but it's peaceful... [Before he goes on about anything more specific, he might as well find out just how different and similar Jake's world is from the boy's.] Do you know of any kind of sports from yours?
Some of the time, it's not bad. [And that's putting it lightly...]
A sport is a type of game in which two teams compete each other. There's all kinds of sports, many of them involve playing with balls. Each one is a different size for its role.
Basketball's my favorite, even though I suck at it half the time... Whenever I'm not swamped with anything else, my friend and I like playing one on one. [There won't likely be basketball ever again if Marco and I aren't out of here real soon, comes a grim thought.]
[Over the occasional noises of the train, light laughter would be heard.]
I found and purchased a ball that's about the same size as a basketball from my world. It's just going to be a little harder to grip.
My friend Marco and I have been wondering where to find a tall basket hoop, where you toss up the ball and score points. We might have to make one, somehow.
[The boy's enthusiasm seems help Jake cope with his homesickness--a little. This kid ain't bad. Poor guy--he's probably very lonely around here.] I don't know if that's going to work out or not, but if it does I could let you know. If we have one more person, it could be an even two on two.
I mean, it must be hard for the lions, to be around someplace so foreign, so unlike anything they're used to.
[So, maybe, just maybe, they are for real. The real thing from the movies, and not actors and actresses in big furry costumes. Hm...]

I think they want out just as much as some of the rest of us do.

I mean...I wanted to leave when I first got here, but this place is pretty nice. I don't think I want to go back.

The place I'm from isn't very nice. It's hard to find food, especially if you're not in a city, and even if you are in one, they're really dangerous.

That I understand, because I live not too far from one. [The way he's talking is starting to generate his homesickness all over again.]
Have you lived in or near cities all your life?

What's your world like? It must be really neat if you'd rather go beck than stay here!
